Top 5 Apartment Locations
I'm thinking about moving to San Diego after being away for many years.
I will be renting and can afford $1,700-$2,500 per month. Amenities that I'm looking for include views, morning walks, close proximity to restaurants, safe neighborhood.
I'm considering the Hillcrest area. Am I off base?
What other areas are possibilities?

You should be able to find something there for that. I use to live in Hillcrest...left in 2000. Had a great 2 bedroom on a canyon for 885...of course that was almost 7 years ago. Your probably won't even need to spend 2500...unless you want too...thats more of a house rental price...if you want a house...it will probably start somewhere around 2000. Where are you moving back from if you don't mind me asking? Also Hillcrest is great for the amenities you are looking for. Close to the lively Gaslamp area and Hillcrest in general is really fun whether your gay or not!!

I grew up in Chula Vista during the 60's, then lived in Palo Alto for 40 years. I've been living in north central New Mexico for the past two years and am starting to yearn for the moderate climate and laid-back feel of the San Diego area. Just musing.

You could probably move to areas that are a lot nicer then Hillcrest on that budget.

For the price you mentioned, you could buy a 2bedroom apartment. Unless it's a really big rental, chances are that you can find one for way less.
If you're truly thinking of buying, I can show you how to find something off the MLS.

Hillcrest is a gay community and shaddy, grimmy area. Try LaJolla, DelMar or Coronada Island if $ isn't an issue.

Hillcrest is gay-friendly, yes, but not grimy or shady. Busy, but that's part of living in the city. There are lots of decent choices in lots of decent areas for 2K a month.

Hillcrest sounds perfect in terms of most of what you're looking for. It's walkable, there are views of the bay if you're high up or at the edge of a canyon, and there are lots of restaurants/stores/cafes.
As far as crime goes, Hillcrest is centrally located and tolerant of anybody and everybody, so you should consider it the equivalent of living downtown. Be on your guard.
Other areas to consider: Mission Hills, Middletown, Old Town, Bankers Hill/Park West, University Heights west of Park Boulevard or north of Adams Avenue, Normal Heights north of Adams Avenue, Kensington, South Park, Golden Hill. All of these neighborhoods have walkable areas, areas with views, at least some cafes and restaurants, and a moderate crime problem.
Another area to consider, more urban and closer to downtown, is Little Italy.
