Lucky people!
Hello everyone. This message is directed to everyone that lives in the greatest city in the world San Diego and complains about it. I don't think you realize how good you have it. I know that it is very expensive to live there and how hard it can be, but look where you live! San Diego is one of the most beautiful places on the planet! I know I grew up there. I currently live in a little town an hour east of Las Vegas called Mesquite Nevada and it really sucks! The city tries hard to market itself as a destination city but unless you come to play golf or gamble there is nothing here. Tonight my wife and I wanted to do something with our 2 year old baby but the small little parks get old real quick so we just came home and sat infront of the TV! It sucked! What I wouldn't give to take a walk on the beach, a trip through Old Town, a day at Balboa park, Seaport village just to name a few things to do! Oh yeah how about $7 to sit at the Park at the Park and watch some baseball! I know I have left out many more things to do. Anyway we are moving back soon and I know it will be expensive but you get what you pay for!!!

I agree.
In fact I also wonder why people think san diego costs so much. Ive been all over the country. Gas is the same +/- maybe 10 cents. I pay more for housing in rural virginia than I did in san diego 10 min from the beach. WTF. People seriously..its not that expensive compared to other areas--actually is pretty comparable and Im not talking NYC or northeast either. Im talking the midwest, the mid-atlantic etc.

In San Diego the cost of living really depends on the individual person - it's how you want to live, and where you want to live. If you want an apartment with amenities in La Jolla, yes, it's going to cost. If you just want a roof over your head, and not live in La Jolla, it doesn't cost.

Militarymom - do you own a home? Do you receive a housing voucher?
Lucky... it's not luck. I pay for the privilege.

True - those in the military receive a housing voucher. But their salaries suck otherwise. And unlike the rest of us - they don't have a choice about living here. They pay for the privilege in a pretty grand way!

To answer your question--
I don't know what you mean by "voucher" but Im assuming you mean we have housing paid for us. I do not live on base, and even if I did I'd be forking over a housing "allowance" about $2500/month if we did so technically even those who do have govt housing "pay" for it. I look at what we get paid (total) per month as our pay, and its pretty modest in my opinion. You don't really get into the military life to get rich, at least not many people I know join for that reason.
In the military you get a base pay (which is peanuts) and then on top of that you get a "housing allowance" based on your location. So in the east you get a bit less (actually its $500 less) than when we were in san diego however, that said we pay $100 more for a pretty comparable home. The housing allowance added to your base pay gives you still less than what my husband could make as a civilian. Not sure if this all makes sense, but military pay scales are no secret you can easily google them and get allowances for housing and base pay per rank. It isn't alot though. We do rent a home this time however and its just a tad larger than what we would have gotten when we were in san diego. It really is all relative. You also have to pay more electric as we have to heat/cool a home here and in SD I think I may have used the A/C for a month last year. We pay less for water since we're not watering our lawn though too.

Just curious, but what's keeping you here? Are you looking for work? Can't decide where you want to go?

San Diego pay is paltry compared to most Cities but that is the trade off. Everyone wants to live here so it's hard to get a commanding wage. There are other factors too since we have a out of control immigrant population willing to work for peanuts but I wouldn't live anywhere else based on the weather alone.
A bad weekend to use as an example.
