Chief of Police Candidate - Chula Vista, CA Looking for thoughts about the City and PD
I've applied as a candidate for the anticipated City of Chula Vista, CA, Chief of Police vacany. I'm a Deputy Police Chief in East Hartford, Connecticut and I'm interested in learning about what the citizens and businesses in the City of Chula Vista feel are the significant challenges facing the City and the Police Department. Also, what qualities are important to them in a Chief of Police.
I would greatly appreciate any and all honest and truthful comments and thoughts.
Sincerely,
John D Murphy

Let me start off by first saying good luck to you Mr. Murphy. I can't really assist you on your question however I am from Connecticut also (Stratford) and am currently attempting to get hired in San Diego.
Best of luck to the both of us!

Yeah
Best of luck sir.
It would be nice to live in a city where I know the police chief's name off the top of my head, because I do not know the name of ours because we never hear from or about him.

The biggest issue facing CV and thier PD is the economy. The State is imploding and the trickle down effect will impact all cities in a major way. Cities will see the impact towards the end of summer. The PD will likely be looking at layoffs, pay cuts and reduced service levels.
Currently the crime isn't bad tho border issues and gangs are a concern.
Rumor has it there are a number of in-house candidates. Even tho they are doing a national search, unsure how likely they will go outside of the local talent. Good luck with your efforts.

Really?I think crime is on the rise here(no matter what the news says) and I don't think CV gangs are a big concern.A concern yes but it's not that bad down here.

Thank you very much for your observations. I'm aware of two qualified internal candidates, however, I feel my skills, experiences, and unique talents will be worthly of consideration.
Sincerely,

Generally, I would pretty much take with a grain of salt anything anyone says in this forum regarding ANY city. That said, you did get knowledgible responses from 2 posters who know what they're talking about. I'd like to add that CV is the second largest city in the county (San Diego is the largest, of course) and, along with the other large cities (Oceanside, El Cajon, Escondido) some areas are better than others. That's common sense.
