Best way to save is check the supermarket ads that come in the mail every week.
Last week I picked up 10lbs of potatoes from Ralphs for .99
Henry's has pineapples this week for .88 each, which is extremely cheap.
Carnival (in Linda Vista) had bananas for .25 per lb last week. They have this same sale around once a month, so I just stock up whenever the sale occurs.
Ralphs sells 1 gallon milk for around $1.99 - no need to buy two, like some stores require to get the best deal.
Many stores sell large eggs for .99 / dozen every few weeks. Just check the ads.
Carnival often has oranges for around 7lbs for $1. Same sale occurs every few months.
Once you become familiar with the weekly ads, you'll learn who has the best deals on certain items, and how often these exact same deals get repeated.

What I got there was potatoes, and I think due to the starchiness they may have "soaked" in the scent. We ate them though, and they were fine.

I live in one of the cottages behind the store, so it's very convenient for me. I also go to Pancho Villa, too, they have great specials on meat from the butcher counter sometimes.

i never shop at von's ralph's,etc. whenever i try,i end up spending 50 bucks nad dont get any of the stuff i use/need. organic produce there is cr*ppy and overpriced,as well.
Jimbos i currently live w/in walking distance of,and i LOVE it. the bakery and their ready mad efoods are fabulous;it's smaller than whole foods and better quality. the WFs in san diego county are NOT that great, compared to others I have been i across the country.
Jimbo's,hands down, has THE best meat and fish delis. Everything's organic or naturally raised. And very fresh. Their homemade soups are excellent. I love it. The prices ARE high. BUT,if you shop for local in season stuff like produce, you'll get some great deals, and everything's organic.
People's co-op used to be my mainstay: they do have the best produce around, aside from farmer's markets. I rarely do markets anymore, they are now so trendy and expensive.
I will qualify my response by saying taht I eat almost exclusively organic, for produce.
Trader Joe's I do use for some staples...though that comes and goes in phases. Currently,TJ's and Jimbo's,followed by whole foods, are my choices.
Henry's in a pinch, but honestly the quality isnt great and it's VERY expensive. I always laugh when people say 'oh i dont shop at whole foods' but they use henry's and voon's instead...god-those places are high too!! Esp if you buy the whole food's brand stuff, the cost is not as high.
Just sayin'...
And,windmill farms every once in awhile for their specialty herbs and items. owned by one of the henry's brothers from the boney days.

Wherever we can get stuff cheapest. Most often, that's Stater's. Next tier is Ralphs and Trader Joe. Occasionally we go to Henry's ... we'd go there more often if it was closer to us. Even more occasionally we go to someplace like the Shakespeare Shop or North Park Produce for things we can't get elsewhere. Vons, but not often because they tend to be more expensive than Ralphs or Staters or Trader Joe for the stuff we buy.

I'm still finding it hard to forget the strikes and the way I was treated the first time I tried to enter the Vons before I even knew wth they were squaking about so I do most of my shopping at Costco and Henrys.

It's interesting that I see a lot of people here shop at Costco... I assume you have families/households larger than 2 people? There's one LITERALLY across the road from me, but whenever I've gone into wholesale stores like that I feel like there's no way we could get our money's worth there. The sizes are huge!
