i remember liking hillcrest and university heights the most out of the 5 local areas i had to spend time in the most, when there last.
that said, which other areas/burbs would you recommend i hit up when there this fall?
i had the impression when on here last fall that north county (?) is where its generally at. truth to that?
thanks so much!

I can't imagine liking Hillcrest, University Heights, and North County. North County is so different than those two areas in so many ways, people pretty much pick one and don't like the others. I'm also not sure most on this board would agree with your assessment that North County is "where it's at." I love North County, born and raised here, but it's not for everyone I guess.

what i herd about north county seemed to be a consensus on here
i only saw like...north park, normal heights, downtown, and the other places i mentioned
i clearly have not seen enough
i hope to get an idea of where i "GOTTA see" when there
looking for areas not dead with culdesacs and boredom
something fun and engaging for a 34y/o male...more into constructive fun than drinking

if people pick one and dont like the others, then i would imagine each uniquely suits certain kinds of needs, yes?

Hillcrest is sort of like South Street - Chestnut between Front - 6th. Young, hip, urban, lots of small shops.

Clairemont is like far NE Philly (Bustleton, Somerton, Bensalem). Nice middle-class suburban residential area.

La Jolla / Coronado are like Main Line / Bala Cynwyd. Lots of wealthy residents.

Mission Valley is like Newtown / Oxford Valley / K of P. Many young professionals, lots of large shopping malls and nice apartment complexes.

Pacific Beach is like summer at the Jersey Shore. Lots of party animals / 20-somethings.

Areas south of downtown SD like National City are less desireable (gangs, etc), but not quite as bad as North Philly.

But all of the above SD places are significantly nicer in appearance than their Philly counterparts.

people on here talk about attitudes and rudeness.
i suppose in comparison to center city and the main line, everyone is cool like fonzie in SD, yeah? i'm talking about people being outright verbally aggressive and trying to **** on your day...angry hater jawns just for the sake of it

Now now. Everyone is aggressive in Illadelphia; not just my black brothers. Philly will eat you up if you don't play their game. They flex on you, you flex back or you get punked - it's how it goes.

Homie - get out here! Been in your exact same shoes. I left the 215 for sunsets and surf about 18months ago. My quality of life has never been better.

Here's the break down: No one cares what you do in San Diego. Stay out of their business and they stay out of yours. There's very little aggressive people down here. Customer service is a billion times better. Everyone is tripping on sunshine and enjoying life. That's our MO. You should come join us. You won't regret it.

SD is not the same as Center City/Philly. If you want to live urban, you'll want to check out Little Italy - understand that it is nothing like the Italian Market area of Philadelphia. The Gas Lamp is not and has nothing on Old City, you probably don't want to live there. North Park or South Park are more Old City hip then else where. Hill Crest is our gaybrahood/Juniper Street but with nicer restraurants. Balboa is our Rittenhouse. University Heights is cute and trend. UTC is another nice area - more suburbish then urban. Then you got you the beaches. And like Philly, we are just as spread out but with way fewer skeezy sections - we have some spots though, for sure.

It's not a total breakdown ... but I did give you a lot of sections of Philly and SD to compare in terms of the general look and feel of the neighborhoods.

Philly as a whole isn't a horrible place to live either. It's a huge city, and there are good and bad sections. It all depends on what section you live in. If you lived close to the Frankford El (Kensington, etc.) you'd find lots of druggies, muggers, etc. IF you lived in Greater Northeast Philly or the surrounding suburbs (Huntingdon Valley, Feasterville, Bensalem, etc), it's a much nicer area.

As a whole, San Diego is MUCH nicer than Philly by a mile. Like Mossomo said, people love living in the constant sunshine, and are generally enjoying life. San Diego has spectacular scenery (palm trees, beautiful beaches, mountains, deserts, canyons, bays filled with sailbots, incredible sunsets) so you will love the views.

San Diego also has lots of different types of neighborhoods to choose from, so I was trying to give you a feel for a few of them, by comparing them to areas of Philly.
