Now that I've jinxed it, I'm sure we're all doomed. But when the rest of the country gets wiped off the map by hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, blizzards, etc every year like clockwork and they talk about the devastating earthquakes as some reason not to live here, ya gotta laugh.
Both Northern and Southern Cal are now overdue for major earthquakes, much larger than the Northridge or Loma Prieta quakes of the last 20 years.

While it's true other areas have their problems with natural disasters, I couldn't fault anyone for not moving here because of the earthquakes.

Just be aware that San Diego is a suburban style city. It does not have a large urban core like Philadelphia does.

I guess it's kind of like people who don't want to fly in an airplane because it might crash. Yet, they'll drive their car, which puts them at infinitely higher risk of death and injury compared to flying.
Avoiding California because 'the big one' might come is irrational. It may come, and it probably will at some point, but then again, it never has and maybe it never will.

on another note, the Piazza in northern liberties...while it may be the future and awe inspiring, there have been shootings and stabbings there

I think I know what you are referring to when you speak of the "agro" mentality. Walking down South St, and being forced to walk in gutter to get around/thru some of the thugs who hang out there.
haha, im not saying that i despise all of my city, but just in comparison to san diego, as a whole. philly is not for everyone. when you live here it isnt all about center city and rittenhouse sq. im talking about day to day things. simple things like going to the store or the Dr's office. The mentality!!! can't stress it enough. now i do live near south st, but i would gladly do you the "favor" and bring it out there with me. you can keep it too! south st is only good for partying on weekends. come the evening if your getting home from work and just want to get home, its a friggin zoo to even cross. makes me want to learn martial arts.

LOL....I completely understand your frustration. I'm all about urban living but I do believe that too much of it can be draining. Found that out on my first visit to NYC, when I accompanied a friend to do his errands. Damn.... subways, ferries, trains....I was exhausted at the end of the day and all we did was go to Kinko's and pick up some artwork!

Seriously, compared to Philly or NYC, SD is a breeze to live in.

That's why I recommend Lower Bucks County as an alternative place to move to. Spend a few hours at the Oxford Valley Mall. Take a drive to New Hope. Drive through Langhorne along Bustleton Pike. Take 413 out to Newtown / Yardley. Rent a canoe at Washington's Crossing, and enjoy the nicer more scenic sections of the Delaware River.

South Philly will still be there ... it's just 1/2 hour away.

Suburban Philly life is much less stressfull.

Living in San Diego is great. There is no doubt about it. But don't feel that it has to be either South Philly or San Diego. You do have other options in the Philly area.

I personally wouldn't live in an urban area like South Philly or Center City because of the congestion. Too many people. Too much concrete. Too much noise. Parking is a hassle. And there's the inner-city crime. I prefer open areas with lots of trees, parks, and homes spread out with nice yards. And whenever I want to go into the city, I just drive there, spend a few hours having fun, and then go home to a nice, quiet suburb.

I have already expressed that suburban bucks county does not interest me. I am aware that i have other choices that south philly and san diego. the northeastern suburbs are not a place for someone like myself. it is bad enought that i am forced to work a full time nonsense job that i despise. as a hobby i am a musician (writer, performer). the suburbs just dont work for someone like me. even though san diego is more of a suburban type city/county, it is more inspiring than a cookie cutter northeastern suburb. i might as well buy a minivan and start cutting coupons.

Move to Pacific Beach in SD. Its got the California beachy feel, with less SOCAL Douchbagery(still some though) and its only 10-15 minutes from downtown. Or Ocean beach but ocean beach is a little more run down its still got the cool hippie vibe which might be good if ur a musician.
