to san diego from philly
is it right for me?
i spent most of my childhood in pasadena california, but i was born in philly, and have lived mainly in PA and NY since 83. i'm 34, native american, from an upper middle family...i'd be moving with my girlfriend, 30, white, from wester NY.
its funny. while being born here in philly, it feels like home, but spending my life in pasadena from ages 2 to 9, the people in cali, it feels like they speak my language. the people in cali/san diego are ON what i'm on, and its evident from friends i make in philly to every job i've had.
what i'm asking about is...
i'm sick and tired of being in philly/NE and the bull**** i get EVERWHERE and EVERYDAY with aggressive black people in public who are very ok with confronting my girlfriend and i, as if my girl took something that they own, me, assuming i'm a "light skinned black guy". unless you have lived here and been in such a relationship, you may not know that this is typical. is this the norm there? i mean, i need to leave this bs behind. its the norm here to be overly concerned with the possibility that the next person is doing better than you, and realisticly taking the next step to destructively evening such odds. i am SO not kidding.
also,
i am so NOT the local angry working class. thats philly for you. whereas if you arent bitter and angry with low expectations in life, then you are treated as if something is wrong with you. has anyone eperienced this in the new england states/philly? please break down the degree to which this does or preferably does NOT exist in san diego. i DESPERATELY need to leave this behind and if SD is not the route, the sooner i find out the better. even if there is a different version of any of this in SD, please break that down for me
thanks

I'm from NY myself and have been living in SD for almost 2 years now. From what I can tell, besides the very prevalent materialism seen downtown, there is definitely a more laid back vibe to the area. I'm not necessarily saying that people don’t work as hard, I'm just saying they have more fun doing it. Also, there are a lot of very active people and for fun their focus is doing outdoor activities and enjoying the wonderful weather, as opposed to wasting their time bickering about things and harassing other people's girlfriends. There are jerks everywhere in the world, but overall the people here like to be happy and enjoy the good life.
Hope this helps,
-Evan

People in San Diego are much more chill, and will leave you alone.
Your gonna have aggressive people anywhere you go, it's just the way it is, but overall SD is a much more calmer city than Philly.
The type of jerks you can encounter are all mostly on the Trolley, or driving on our freeways. But just by walking down the street, I haven't noticed it.

Listen Serpent_of_Mold,
Everyplace got its charms and warts. Philly got cheesteaks, Rocky, pretzels and lots of average Joes. San Diego got La Jolla, Chula Vista, Fish Tacos and lots and lots and lots of silicon enhanced. I can let you guess which are the charms and which are the warts. There's cool people and losers in every city.

Philly is it's own unique brand of coarse that NYC and other eastern seaboard cities really can't touch. Philly is a cool city but I would never live in the city itself. Philly suburbs are some of the nicest suburbs in the country, much nicer than San Diego's for instance. San Diego is cool because you can actually live in city and not really worry too much about it.

They vary widely from nice to scuzzy, but there is nothing like the main line towns here. Maybe La Jolla and Del Mar.
