Try going to this Google maps link, click on satellite view, and zoom in to the maximum. Then click on "Street View".

You will be able use your mouse to "virtually" drive around the street, and look at actual photos at street level, as if you were driving down the street in your own car.

Google Maps - Lauretta St San Diego 92110

To use your mouse, left click on the Street View image, and drag the mouse, and your screen will rotate 360 degrees. Then click on the arrows on the middle of the street, and you will move along the street in the direction of the arrow. You can also zoom in and out to get a closer look at any image along the street.

Could you have your relative scope it out then? Even though that area is fine if a bit ghetto, it would be best to have someone take a look at it.

I don't believe it is a ghetto at all in the Lauretta St. area.

As I said, the problem area is a few miles away up Linda Vista Rd, going towards Genesee Ave.

And even the problem area is not really horrible. Just a lot of high school kids walking around, and low income families. Probably some vandalism, grafitti, etc. Nothing really serious.

That area isn't so bad. We have a PO Box in a Post Office in LV and I don't feel unsafe going there / driving around there at all. The area is mostly populated with working class Vietnamese, Latino and other "ethnic" groups..

This reminds me of a quick story. We had lunch one time with one of my in-law's friends that's a lifetime San Diego resident (he lives in Kensington), and I asked him about LV and he said something along the lines of "well you do know it's all Asian, right?" or something to that effect. My reason to share that is that I think that's how people think at times; just because the area is mostly non-white, that it's bad somehow.

Granted LV isn't the most scenic, and there *is* a good deal of low income housing that can change the safety of the area block to block, but it's definitely not the worst area in SD, and the area you are looking at should be ok.

Friars Rd. is right along an upscale shopping district. The apartments along this road are newer, and nicer.

As you go up Linda Vista Rd. from USD, you will reach an older section, near Comstock Rd., and that is where you will start having lower-income families. I think this Comstock Rd area was one of the first areas with homes when the Linda Vista section was first built in the late 1950s.

Mission Valley / Fashion Valley along Friars Rd is a newer area, especially near the malls.

I play tennis at the courts at Linda Vista Park, which is near Genesee Ave and Linda Vista Rd, and they sometimes get vandalized with grafitti. The fence at the tennis practice wall was destroyed by vandals last year, then eventually replaced, and then broken again by vandals.

So there are definitely problem kids hanging in that area.

Yeah, it seems to be than a lot of high density low income areas have issues with crap like that. It's a shame, too.

I think though (and please correct me if I'm wrong) that the area the OP is looking at is a bit better than the area around Linda Vista Park.
