Rough as (4 Letter word that rhymes with rough)
Not the worst area in the city but there is a high gang presence and crime culture in the Linda Vista zone.Even I would not live there.Try Clairmont or Msn Valley.

It's really not bad. Especially that area...You're right by USD and the Linda Vista/Napa shopping complex. Linda Vista is certainly not one of the worse areas of the city, it's just probably the poorest north of the 8.
jksouthbay is right that Clairemont is nicer, but seriously, you should be fine.

Radical347: that makes me feel a little better, a family member said they know of a townhouse for rent on Lauretta St. that they can get us in but he didnt say much about the area.....
i didn't realize it was that close to USD....does that mean there is a lot of college aged people living in that area???

It's kinda ghetto, but not as ghetto or dangerous like City Heights or SouthEast SD.

Lauretta St is down by the University of San Diego, which is a beautiful campus on top of a hill on Linda Vista Rd.
I don't think that section of Linda Vista Rd is bad. It's actually pretty close to Mission/Fashion Valley, which is a great shopping area with upscale malls.
The problems along Linda Vista Rd more likely begin a few miles away around Comstock St. (near the Post Office / Library) and continue along Linda Vista Rd towards the high school area, just behind Mesa College. There are some older homes / apartments in this area, so there are probably lower-income families living in them, and associated problem kids.
So I don't think you will have problems on Lauretta St. But it still pays to check the area yourself first, and ask a few neighbors how they like it, before you commit to a lease.
One thing I can tell you about that area, is the streets have pretty steep inclines, so walking around can be a chore.
Also, there isn't a lot of shopping within walking distance. Just a few strip centers along Linda Vista Rd, and a little more shopping where Linda Vista crosses Napa St.
The Fashion Valley Shopping Mall is about 1 mile east on Friars Rd, and it huge, and has upscale department stores. Then even more malls are located along Friars Rd, and along nearby Rt 8.
I also agree that nearby Clairemont is another good choice. It's more residential, and the streets are much more flat. Also has lots of shopping, especially at Balboa Ave and Genesee Ave.

Well, your car may get stolen but really that's everywhere in San Diego. Your house is not likely to get broken into (but no guarantees), the houses aren't so much old as they are newer but cheaply built, the residents are low income and I don't have word on whether or not they're nice. Some of them will be, I'm sure.
