Default La Jolla/UTC or Del Mar area?

Hi,

Considering renting an apartment (1BR) in either the UTC area or Del Mar/Carmel Valley. I would like to live somewhere safe (I hear UTC is huge for car theft), calm/quiet, walkable, clean, and would prefer close to restaurants/general shopping (Target etc).

Which area would fit the bill better? Also are there any other nice areas that I am missing in this general northern area of SD? Are renting opportunities in Del Mar/Carmel pretty scarce?

Thanks for any advice/suggestions!!

Del Mar/Carmel Valley will cost more and UTC has a lot more shops you can go to. Since UTC is where students are, there are more places in the area.

As far as car theft, I suppose it depends on the population density, and what kind of parking you have. Some of the UTC places have their own parking garages.

i recently checked out a place in del mar and at the time they had a one bedroom ground level for I believe 1295. just west of I-5 - http://www.parkplacedelmar.com/. There is a small strip mall with a Von's across the street and Del Mar Highlands Town Center a mile east and the best part is the ocean 1 mile west

I live in the UTC area and think it is a great area. There are some great apartments, and there are probably more places that you can find with reasonable rent due to the UCSD right around the corner. You are also close to the 5, 52, and 805 freeways, which make it easy to get around town. One thing you might consider is your commute. The 5/805 split is the biggest congestion spot in the city. If you always need to commute to north county then Del Mar would be better. If you want to commute south to SD for ballgames/nightlife then UTC is better. Beaches are great anywhere in SD, and each has a particular personality.

Thanks for the replies guys. For those of you in UTC, what kind of rent are you guys paying? Is it pretty much expected to pay at least 1100+ for 1BR? Also, have you personally heard any stories about what are the good complexes and maybe which are the ones to avoid?

Any specific thoughts/opinions on the following would be great: Mirada, Trieste, La Jolla Crossroads, Costa Verde Village

Thanks!
