Bicycling Routes and Timing
My husband and I are moving to PB in Sept. We have 1 car, he uses his bike to get around. Is it difficult (time extensive) to bike ride Downtown if necessary for work?
Also, where are some great places to ride and does anyone know of distances/time to different neighborhoods or points of interest? Your help is much appreciated! Just trying to settle on an exact area and see what's feasible. Don't want 2 cars. 1 is 1 too many.
Thanks!

I bike (casually) around PB several times a week. Biking downtown from PB would be a little tough. It could be done but I certainly wouldn't want to do it.
If you want to live near the coast and bike downtown, Point Loma (92106) and Ocean Beach (92107) would be much better living choices.

I think that's pretty far to bike ride when you have a schedule. Well, you can put a bike on a bus, they have racks on the front for like 2 or 3 bikes.

Depends on how fast you are. PB to downtown and back is about 40 min to an hour.
They are trying to complete a route along the SD River that will go all the way inland.
I used to take Nimitz all the way into down town but I would side step the main drags in traffic by riding over a couple of streets.
Years ago there was talk of a canal between Mission Bay and SD Bay that would have had a cool flat bike route next to it but that was before the City was broke.

The distance from PB to downtown is not the issue, it is the streets you would need to take. They are very high-speed, high traffic streets with lots of under / overpasses and are almost highways. Avoiding that often means a somewhat curcuituous route which adds a bunch of time. One way to do it is to go through Mission Bay park to PCH, and then off of PCH as fast as you can to Harbor or Kettner. Good luck, it is not a ride for the faint of heart.

You may have better luck riding to the Old Town station and getting on the Coaster train, since you can more easily put bikes on the Coaster and it will go directly to downtown. The ride from PB to Old Town is probably not too bad.
