You can see San Diego's western roots all over the place in Old Town.

God, the things people complain about in San Diego. Honestly. Put up a freaking split rail fence in your front yard. Geez.

El Cajon, Klantee, Lakeside, downtown La Mesa definitely has a Midwestern look and feel to it. Lot's of Rednecks, trailer trash roaming around all day long in Ford Pickups. Honestly East County feels like your not even in the real San Diego with palm trees, beaches in all. More like somewhere in the South or Midwest, just because the way things look out here and the people makes it very Midwesterny, lot's of Nascar wannabe's ( they wish they had Nascar out here) and hard core military patriots that will die for the USA without questions, hard core truck lovers and bro's galore.

The dryness, and mountains that overlook the East, also contribute to the look. Rural sections of El Cajon and Lakeside definetly make you feel like your not even in California.

Take a breath..

It was an observation and not really a complaint. It's a valid one as well, I'm sure many others have wondered.

I wonder, personally, and anticdotally, if Spain plays a role in why. I see spain here, but not the old west.

Lots of rednecks and trailer trash roaming around in Ford pickups all day long, lots of hardcore military, desert (the "dryness" you describe), ranchland-turned-rural suburbs, and mountains to the east - yep, that sounds like the midwest all right

Actually, the diverse scenery IS California (the old saying that you can go to the desert, ski in the mountains, and be at the beach the same day).

Ok, I've taken a breath. It's still stupid. And of course Spanish influence is reflected in San Diego. It was, after all, settled by Spanish explorers. I wonder if people in Oklahoma complain about the lack of palm trees and red-tiled roofs.

A little harsh.

No he's a candidate for the other Question I asked... Why are people here so rude.

His lack of depth shows as well, because as we all know Florida was occupied by the Spaniards and yet you do not see the influence such as exists California.

I'm only rude when totally ignorant people with 9 post under their belts (actually 7 at the time you posted this gem) pop off about stuff they have no idea about. That's all. I don't have a reputation on this board of being rude. Your post was just idiotic and I thought I'd point it out. You should lurk more and post less until you have an interesting question to pose to the board. JMHO. And it's interesting to note the fellow poster supporting you once wondered why there are no street lights on SD streets. Another classic.
