interesting house corner of Kalmia and Union
Does anyone know about the very interesting old house on the corner of Kalmia and Union in Banker's Hill/Park West? My son just moved onto that street and we are just fascinated by that house! It's such an unusual style and I've never seen anything like it. Not sure how to find out more about particular houses but maybe someone here knows.

That is a very cool house, I can see why it piqued your curiosity. It is an odd amalgamation of styles, a little bit Mission Revival, Arts and Crafts, a bit of Queen Anne with the towered cupola room and even Irving Gillesque with the simple thick arches at the porch. The flared parapet is particularly dramatic and unusual.
I don't know more than that, but as an architectural designer who works often with houses of this vintage, I would salivate to work on the restoration of this one. Knowing the state of the city's Historical Resource Board, I would bet good money it would be an automatic (even forced) Historic Resource designation if the owner ever wanted to do any major renovation. It would be fun to look at some old photos of the area, or other information at the archives to maybe gain more insight.

Look at it on Google Earth. It looks like it shows as 2404 Union, it's the house with a tall narrow tree and bunch of small palms in front, a telephone pole to the right side of the house. The picture doesn't begin to show the detail though. The house seems much more imposing in person. (my kids say it looks "haunted"...) What is the feature on either side of the windows on the left side of the house? They look like barbershop poles to me but don't show up well on the picture.file:///C:/Users/user/AppData/Local/Temp/moz-screenshot.jpg (broken link)
