I'm going from a $250k 3 y.o. modern 2200 sq.ft. house with 0.7 acres in one of the best places to live (according to multiple publications) to a $500k priced 1960s house with 1400 sqft in Bay Ho/Mission beach area.
Real estate, car insurance and state tax is expensive.
The perfect weather, proximity to the beach, and lifestyle is priceless.
That whay I'm moving there. Where others see misery, I see potential. Hopefully my bubble won't burst, too.

the overall income tax (state + federal) is about 45% max. Compared to Germany, Europe, San Diego is still a little bit cheaper. I think you are very well off with your salary :-)
