What's the reputation of Carmel Mountain Ranch?
Just curious to know what your thoughts are on Carmel Mountain Ranch as I'm considering settling down there. What is the reputation of that area overall?

I don't know the area but I am curious about it and would like to know more myself.
From
California School Performance Maps
it looks like the schools are really good.
It's interesting that the Carmel Mountain Plaza has it's own zip code 92199 though the majority of the region is 92128.

Would you be working in the area?
Married?
Kids? Ages?

It's a typical newer inland North County tract, good schools, safe, family friendly, stripmall amenities, small lots, cookie cutter homes. It has no particular cultural or regional identity. It is a bit less expensive than similar areas of Carlsbad or 56 corridor due to location and age.

Looked at a few houses in CMR several years back. I remember a few things:
1. small lots
2. plain jane homes
3. lots of kids
4. annoying road noise coming off the 15.
The country club is pretty nice: San Diego Golf Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club - San Diego CA

I lived there for a few years. I liked it, but then again I like safe communities where kids play in the streets and your neighbors know you. I also prefer cookie cutter homes to overpriced beach communities that can appear unkept in many places even though perhaps they are beautiful on the inside and which have even smaller lots . In fact it was the lot that sold us on our home it was that large. I liked being a walk from school, library, pool, shopping etc. Poway schools are the best, but beware highland ranch has a poor principal. Out of all the areas we've lived in san diego (n. carlsbad, east chula vista and cmr, cmr wins hands down. I'm sure there are some areas of cmr that get noise from the 15 but we never did. I'd highly recommend the area. It is a family oriented community though, I don't know if I'd suggest it to a young professional.

A lot of people like the schools up there I think. Many people will work in the larger industrial/office parks in that area - a lot of defense and electronics, I think. Big companies like Sony employ a lot of people up there. More humorously, I've heard rumors that there is something of disproportionately active swingers' community in that neighborhood (not that I'd know much about that).
