There was a California Supreme Court case known as "Corbett v. Franchise Tax Board" which helped determine residency criteria. There are 29 residency criteria. If you Google the case name, you'll find lots on this topic.

Wow, really interesting stuff. As a result of that case, it looks like if you are in CA for 6 or more months out of the year, you are considered a 'resident' if you engage in any non-tourist related activity
even if you maintain a permanent domicile outside the state. They do their best to encompass as many people as possible, huh?
