Default Best doughnut shop in San Diego?

OK--so it's my husband's birthday next month, and although I've kept pestering him for something more--all he seems to want is some doughnuts from Dunkin Donuts (we typically don't include such items in our diet ).

Big massive problem--there's no Dunkin Donuts out here!

Anyhow, I'm trying to determine where to get the best doughnuts out here. Preferably the type the DD has, as in filled (jelly or custard), not necessarily glazed like Krispy Kreme. Any former east coasters know what I'm talking about?

I'm looking at Yelp for reviews, and there's not really an "obvious" answer...so I figured I'd add a post here as well. Anywhere in SD county would do, preferably in San Diego itself but since it's his b-day, I'm willing to drive if somewhere further has something awesome.

Well, I always hear VG's is good. I think I've had their donuts before, but I can't remember.
VG Donuts & Bakery - Encinitas - Cardiff, CA

Around here the chain is Winchell's or Krispy Kreme, I don't really like either one. Winchell's is okay, kind of feels a little less modern than Dunkin. Krispy Kreme does not taste like standard donuts like Dunkin. Generally I try to find some local shop or local chain if I'm trying to find something similar to Dunkin Donuts.

There is only one that comes to mind.

Mary's Donuts in Santee. It is a mom and pop operation and has been there for decades and they are open 24 hours. They have a good selection and everything is always fresh.

Its at the intersection of mission gorge and fanita.

Here is the yelp review

No Dunkin Donuts?

"San Diego" "Dunkin Donuts" - Google Maps

If neither of those are still around, there's always the next best thing:

"San Diego" "Yum Yum Donuts" - Google Maps

When we lived in OB, my wife and I would get a bag of donuts from OB Donuts (cash only) and walk down to Sunset Cliffs to eat them. The donuts are good but the cliffs are better.

I've always heard people talk about VG's in Cardiff too. I'm not really a donut person but I thought they were pretty good.

Down my way there is place that everyone goes to called Bakery Corner.I live about 4.5 miles northeast from there and it's worth the drive. There's always no parking and the run about 80 cents to $1.35.That's how you know its good.

Its on the SE corner of Third and Moss in South Central Chula Vista

Hmm...I searched on the DD site for locations and there were none. Google street view doesn't look like there's anything there where the markers are. Odd.

I think they just might be locations where they sell them inside another store, kind of how like Krispy Kreme or White Castle is sold inside some grocery stores that have them shipped there. That's what I've been told at least with regards to Dunkin Donuts here.

I've never been to a Dunkin Donuts in San Diego. However, here's a DD attached to a Baskin Robbins:
