Stay where you are, you'll be bored out of your mind (especially if you love NYC). Originally from LA and I lived in Manhattan for 2 years before living in SD. I am here for 1.75 years now, and will leave this place soon. I just need to fulfill my 2 years commitment of work, and that's why I am here this long. At your age, SD won't be fun. It's only fun if you grow up in smaller towns before, a native of West Coast, a beach guy, or want to start a new family.
SD sounds like a good idea because it's different from NYC. For example, when you live in a nice slow pace city like SD, you want to travel to somewhere different and that would be NYC. When I was living in NYC, I love leaving to town after a few months just to get away. So, think hard before you come.

You have your plus/minuses in all locations - try to have the attitude to enjoy the pluses, but this is a personal choice. Is the work part of SD boring for you, or just the SD city life?

You really don't know much about the Bay Area if you think there are few suburban tract homes or massive strip malls, try leaving the CITY of SF and you'll find plenty of it in the suburbs.

That's a bit silly to say, depending on the guy's interests. If he enjoys outdoor activities year around for instance that will keep him plenty busy. San Diego is obviously no NYC (or is any other city in the US for that matter) but it's still a decent size metro area with different scenes for music, food, nighttime, etc. To say it's no fun, well then that leaves only a few major cities to have "fun" in.

NYC is a hundred time the city any city is in this country, but it is not comparable to SD in any way. SD could mean the whole county where you could go from city to beach to burb to the friggin border. NYC is the city (assuming the OP is talking about the city and not the surrounding burbs). a change of scenery is always nice. go for it OP. im planning my move from philly to SD at this time as well. im trying to get a job first but making a special trip just to interview sounds like a waste if i dont get the job. good luck to you. go yankees

Hey everyone, thanks for the great answers. I'm gonna drive out there on Monday and stay with friends for a few weeks to get a feel for the place. Maybe try to get an interview or two (to see if there is indeed available work)...
If anyone cares, I'll post again when I get back

Sorry but jobs have never been plentiful in San Diego.
I did the NY to CA thing many years ago. Now live back on the east coast. I'm not going to tell someone not to do it because I did it myself when I was young.
But I attended college out there and settled and worked in LA for many years and was sucessful, so I can't tell someone to not to try something I did.
But even in a good economy San Diego is tough job market. I prefer San Diego to LA, but it is proably the hardest city in CA to find employment in.
Good Luck!!!

If you want something completely different then it's a good idea to check out the west coast but if not then maybe another city like DC, Boston, or if you want warm weather Miami maybe. SF might be another good option, it's more like east coast cities than SD is.

Sorry you can't compare the weather in San Diego to Miami..... having lived in CA many years and now FL....apples to oranges....the humidity is a killer here.
The only time the weather is similar is in the winter months when the humidity drops.
Southern CA by far has the best weather in the country. I wouldn't tell anyone to go to Miami....it is like Newark with palm trees.
