Encinitas or Near Downtown?
So I spent a week in San Diego last spring. I have been many times and I am thinking about relocating from the SF Bay Area - I am a single 37 year old guy. I loved Encinitas and I am really considering that. I also really liked Southern OB, Point Loma / Sunset Cliffs. Just a great area despite the drive in and out.
Proximity to the ocean and walk-ability are two of my main criteria. Also quick access to hiking (my favorite activity) and watersports are key. I liked La Jolla, but not to live. Same for Del Mar or Solana Beach. MB,PB seem a little too party orientated for me. I do like areas downtown like Hillcrest, Mission Hills, Bankers Hill. But proximity to the beach trumps those areas. So where do you think a guy like me would be better suited to meet others? Encinitas/North County or Sunset Cliffs area, - or am I missing somewhere else?

It sounds like Encinitas could provide what you are looking for. Not that it's the only area of SD that can, but it does for sure and I think you'd be happy here. The downtown neighborhoods you mentioned are less than a half-hour drive away, so it's possible to experience them for restaurants, nights out, etc. Surfing is huge in Encinitas, every where you go you see surfboards on racks and sticking out of car windows. There also is a large running and triathalon community here, lots of joggers, cross-trainers, etc. Kayaking, paddle boarding (standing up on a flat surfboard using a paddle to move) also are popular outdoor activities.
I think you'd like Encinitas, but then I was born in this area and live here so maybe I'm biased! Good luck on wherever you decide to settle down.

Wow, well all in favor of Encinitas so far!
Encinitan, you made some great points. I spent a lot of time around the area so I see what you mean. I was there for the Encinitas Street Fair, which gave me a great feel for the town.

Encinitas is a great place. If I were you I would take a week and explore the SD coast. Coming from SF you really don't have an excuse.

They have a street fair in spring and one in the fall. Both are great community events. They do lots of great civic events in town. Taste of Main Street every August, the Bro-Am charity surf contest sponsored by the band Switchfoot (Encinitas residents) in June, Halloween trick or treating at the downtown shops, Christmas Parade featuring Santa riding in a woodie wagon. It's a great city. Some people think it's snobby or elitist, but it's not La Jolla or Del Mar, which pretty much old the titles in that department.

Lived in Del Mar for 1 1/2 years and loved the proximity to the beach and schools-then moved to Carlsbad, love it 10 times more (south end-right by Encinitas)way nicer people, reminds me of growing up in Huntington Beach (which is turning into a cross between Del Mar and Miami now)
when the family wants to go for a day trip (beach, lunch, walking and shopping) we head a couple miles south...
Encinitas if I was staying I would be there
