Default Not sure where to move in San Diego

Hi,

My family and I are moving to San Diego early next year and I am so confused by the feedback we have received over here (Hawaii) as to where to move. My husband will be working at Point Loma and at this stage of our lives we are hoping to buy a home. We have two children, a five year old and an eight month old. Although we would love to move to the area's people have recommended closer to Point Loma, financially that is not possible. We have looked at the newer parts of Chula Vista (online only) which to purchase are in our price range. I am interested in any feed back from the safety of the area and the drive to Point Loma.

Thank you so much I would appreciate any feedback and recommendations.

Regards,

Kaz

Take a look at this thread and look at the "nicer, quieter areas" since you are a family. Then feel free to ask any additional questions about those areas. I would stay out of North County for your commute though and focus on Central or Southern SD.

I would choose Point Loma over CV any day.
No disrespect to anyone, but I would stay as far north of the border as possible.
I used to work for the probation department and most of the property crimes, car thefts and drug activity was closer to the border.

Whatever you decide, I wish you the best.

Thank you for your feedback - I really appreciate it. It's a hard moving to a place where you haven't been before and wanting to do the best and a safest thing for your family. Thank you again.

It's not that bad down here. Both Pt Loma and CV are pretty good places to live.

I Second what jksouthbay said...they are both great places. But if Point Loma is out of your price range for buying. Then East Chula Vista is a good choice in my opinion. I lived there and loved it. If it wasn't for my wifes military service we would still be there and hope to settle there again when she gets out or retires.

We found Eastern Chula Vista (i.e.: Eastlake area) to be a very nice place to raise a family. I look all the time online and there are still some good buys in Eastlake , Otay Ranch and other neighborhoods of East Chula Vista. Check out Zip Realty.com , they will send you tons of house online in an area you request and also without the hassle of having to deal with a Realtor until your ready. It really helped us in our search here in the DC area to find a house we wanted and then just used our own realtor to view homes and narrow down the search.

Goodluck with your move !!!!

If you have a 5 year old going into school, and cant afford private school, start your search here

GreatSchools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community

if you read carefully, it will tell you more about a neighborhood than it first seems-demographics, average income (free lunches?) and more

my favorite neighborhood research tool (next to this one)

My advice ...

Rent a house in San Diego for several months first, and explore the area.

Become familiar with San Diego before you commit to purchasing a home.

There are lots of different types of neighborhoods throughout San Diego. Each has a different feel. Find the one that's right for your family.

By renting, you won't be in a rush to jump on the first house that becomes available. You'll have more time to make a sound choice.

And while exploring neighborhoods, walk up to area residents and ask them how they like living there. Find out what issues exist (crime, noise, etc.)
