I don't think any other US city can compare to the massive scale of NYC, including it's fast pace lifestyle. Anyone from the East Coast will find most of America is rather chugging along at a much slower pace compared to the East Coast.
So I think it's a bit unfair now to even compare SD to NYC, or Denver to NYC, or Phoenix to NYC and so on because NYC has millions upon millions of people living there so of course the levels of intensity in it's lifestyle is much higher.
I'm sure some people that have moved here from another city (not East Coasters)will think SD is a huge city with lot's of activity. But if your a person to come from LA, SF, NYC, Chicago, Miami, Houston, Dallas, then San Diego might seem much slower to you, and not as interesting.
One major issue with SD is that the jobs are located mostly up north, away from the urban sector of SD, this creates long commute times, and leaves downtown SD dead during the day creating a sense of "no life" syndrome because most of the work in downtown are in law.
At night, and on the weekends, it's a completely different story, it's bustling with life.

Yea, I'm not trying to compare NYC to SD, I just think from the post the things "they" want are not really in SD more like Maine or something.

That's a poor blanket statement.

Maine? No, we visited once (very nice place) but is in the category I would call slow. We just need something slow er than NYC. Anyway, I belive we'll get a real sense of SD when we visit. Any ideas on where to stay?

The local unemployment rate is at about 10.5% right now and the building trades (such as carpenters like your husband) are the hardest hit. If you folks move out here right now he'll find it tough sledding to secure a job.

and please keep in mind that the carpentry/building industry has been taken over by immigrants and pushed out the higher paid workers.

I was just wondering...would I get beat up if I wore a NY Giants Manning jersey?
