Need some pointers and tips
Im looking to move to San Diego within the next couple of months, but Im having a hard time finding a job. Any one have a ideas on the best way to go about doing this from the other side of the country?! I am a certified teacher in NY but have yet been able to get a job here teaching so I dont have much in the way of experience. Im looking for anything to allow me to get out there and get set up without having to tap out my savings and live in a cardboard box!

I moved here July 30th 2008 from NJ and I am still out of work. I got a temp job for 5 months but that was it. I am an executive Assistant which you would think I could do anywhere. The one job I did get was at a $19,000 paycut. I never thought it would be true but you literally cannot get a job here. Even at Petsmart, Bath and Body Works or Walmart. I have burned though ALL my savings and now I am in debtt. I wish you luck but don't come without a job.

I just want to thank you for being honest, upfront and detailed about your experience moving to SD. I was still in SD when you had just made your move and many of us warned you that it would not turn out well. I guess you've woken up hungover from your SoCal drunken glee.
Please keep sharing your story for those who do not realize the depth of problems they will take on moving here. We should bet on the percentage of those who posted about moving in and how many returned home.
Rep points to you

Yes folks do not understand the level of economic decay here in SD. One would think as a waiter or nurse or other that no matter where you go in the USA there is work. This is not True with SD.
And further while NY and other areas begin recovery, SD is not in recovery.
This is no place to move for virtually anyone in any occupation.

Don't move here without a job. I lost my job in January 2009, and just got my last unemployment check yesterday. I have a part-time job (8-16 hours per week), and when I got home from it today, I applied for my first unemployment extension. I have been applying for an average of jobs per week. I'm an Administrative Assistant, and can't find anything in my field. I've applied at all the retail stores, (most applications are online), and have gotten nowhere. PetPeople had a sign by the register that said "Help Wanted," so I filled out an application, left it off, and never got called. The same with Bed, Bath and Beyond. WalMart has a freeze on, and Target only hired 50 people for the holiday season. Even the minimum wage jobs, seasonal or otherwise, are impossible to get.
So my advice to you is to stay where you are until the economy improves here. There are numerous other posts on the same subject, and you should read them. Coming here right now without a job would be a big mistake.
