10% State Tax....
Can anyone explain this to me...I was taxed hard on Friday by the new 10% tax.
I was under the impression that they took an additonal 10% of your state tax each pay period. For instance, if your state tax is $200 each pay period, you would now pay $220. Apparently, this is not the case as I was butchered well beyond that.
How is this working...does anyone know?

They are only increasing the state withholding by ten percent.

That's what i figured but they increased my state withholding well above that- are they making up for the periods in the 09 tax year that I didn't get the increase or did my payroll screw things up and do everything up front.

There's an easy fix. Just increase the number of exemptions on your W-4 and WE-4... You should be estimating your taxes and adjusting your exemptions a couple times a year anyway.
If every TAXPAYER in California did this (simply increase their number of exemptions) then it beats this whole interest free loan aka 10% state withholding tax increase, thus sending a STRONG and LOUD message to Sacramento's radical liberal-socialist to CUT SPENDING and LIVE WITHIN THEIR MEANS..ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!

I'm not sure how it is in california but I know in Pennsylvania they doubled the allowable time period of unemployment benefits from 3 months to 6 months. This is more than likely the underlying reasoning behind such a tax.
Given CA's unemployment that is rising that would be my guess.

I don't know about PA but CA is only going to get worse. A lot of states are in trouble but this one takes the cake.

Why not move to a conservative tax-free state like Texas or Florida?
