Type of Conservatisim in San Diego (fiscal vs. Social)
Alot of people talk about how the San Diego metro area is conservative (at least more so than other major cities). Do the conservatives in SD lean more tword the Fiscal (i just don't want the gov to take my money and i want my buisness to have few restraints) conservatives or is it more the social (bible thumping, anti gay, anti abortion, possibly racist) or is it a mix of both.

Fiscal by far, SD is one cheap, anti-tax city. You'll find some pockets of social conservatism in some east and north county areas but mainly it's fiscal conservatism in the county and city.

Thats very accurate. My social network of Social Conservatives is large in SD, both city and 'burbs so I would clarify the Social Conservatives aren't just a "pocket". Just add up the Mormon Temples alone.. And don't forget has a large and varied Evangelical Community thru the many churches in the Metro area (Shadow Mountain, etc..). Plus a very solid Traditional Roman catholic community..

"Cheap" is the best description, to the point where we vote down a tax increase directly tied to fire services one year after the largest wildfire disaster in our history.
Social Conservatism is alive and well, and those "pockets" can span large areas. Personally I would say that the very liberal areas are limited to pockets as well, mostly beach cities and areas around downtown. Although most of the southern parts of the city proper can be described as liberal, they are also the same people that would vote against gay marriage while simultaneously supporting Pres. Obama.

North and East County is very conservative, uptight as well. East County lacks major diversity such as Asians,Blacks, Hispanics , Lakeside El Cajon and Santee can seem racist especially towards Mexicans because of all the border problems.
Bible thumpers reside in East County too, it's like a little bit of Alabama in some spots.
La Mesa, though is in East County is actually pretty moderate since it is closer to San Diego.
I'm not totally sure if SD is all out socially conservative, it really depends on where you live, but it's definitely fiscally conservative.
The county government is still very conservative, anti everything, it's there way or no way, they don't compromise on anything either. They protect rich peoples pockets, while sticking it to the poor.
Things are changing though, hopefully SD voters will vote out the current county board of supervisors, and replace them with libs or moderates because this place desperately needs change.

What exactly is wrong with fiscal conservatism? Do you want the San Diego county/city government to run things like they do in Sacramento ? Liberals in the legislature in Sacramento have bankrupted California with all the give-away policies that they can come up with. Who bites the bullet ?? Taxpayers that's who..., property owners.
I would also like an example of how the county government is "sticking" it to the POOR ? How are they doing it? I'm just curious.

I wouldn't necessarily describe that vote as "cheap", but more of a protest to being over TAXED period. Californians / San Diego residents are paying for every social program under the sun these days and its bankrupted California.
I actually agree that giving more for SERVICES like Cal Fire and other services like Police and infrastructure is a great thing. But when is everyone going to wake up and realize we can't keep dipping in the well for every social woe . There comes a time when enough is enough. You would think most would realize this is the current situation California is in.
Also I don't see how you can criticize the liberals that voted against gay marriage and voted for Pres. Obama? Its not like Obama supports gay marriage , its one of those passes the President gets for being liberal I guess? If it was a Repub pres in office right now they would be labeled a "Bigot" , but again Liberals are quiet when it's one of there own.
As to the original poster , whether your Liberal or Conservative you don't have to worry about people in San Diego in my opinion. I found that 99% of the areas I visited and lived in people could care less if your either and didn't wear there politics on there sleeves. Just be yourself and I think you'll find San Diego a great place to live.
