I'm white and did just fine in Vista when I lived there. In fact we were the only white people on our little street, everyone else was Mexican! I look at it like this...Mexican culture is now just part of the culture of So Cal and part of what makes it distinctive and interesting. To some people, having a diverse population is part of what turns them off. To me, it made it interesting.

Having said that, just check the area as best you can before buying. Some areas are less safe than others, but it's not like your moving to Tijuana! Vista is still firmly north of the border.

Congrats on your house selling! We are living in downtown Oceanside, very close to the Fire Mtn area, so drop me an email when you get here and we can meet up I don't really know anyone here, so am looking for some friends.

We are making it on my husband's teaching salary, though he works in OC. You may want to look at Southern OC for teaching jobs...the commute isn't bad (depending on where you live, we are right off the 5 and his job is right off the 5). Having been here for about a month, I would avoid having to commute on the 78 if possible. It's not the most awful traffic, but it's certainly there.

Good luck!

In response to the last few replies I would just like to say this,

Quote:
Vista has pros and cons like any community.... whether people speak English or not is a toss up. Vista has lovely shopping areas, but depending on the restaurants, it could be spanish speaking only.... last two years had demonstrations with kids leaving the schools for protest marches where they carry the mexican flag and walked up and down main streets for hours blocking traffic screaming long live mexico and yelling stuff in spanish.....
All of which is completely true, you can not deny it. Also there are at least 3 SITDOWN not fastfood restaurants in San Marcos where if you don't speak spanish you don't get served.

Quote:
They say you are a hateful bigot if you even think, "it's right across the border, you can go back any time you like".....
My point was made for me on this one.....

Quote:
I guess it is all about what you want, your age and energy level, what you are willing to deal with. The area is incredibly beautiful, there is NO doubt about that. The beaches are nice and there are TONNES of things to get into.
I am trying to add positive here.

Quote:
Hope this helps you, I was not trying to be negative, just answer you as best I could. Then again , I have been here far too long and am trying to leave the state, so that does flavor my reply a bit.........
My qualifier so that one could chose to take my reply with a grain of salt if it was wished ( apparently there are those who choose not to do so. That is their decision )

I came to So.Cal. in 1981 and fell in love with California. I have seen so many things change though. As much as some want to deny the impact or say "that is just the way things are" parts of So.Cal ARE affected by the population mix. Many schools here have spanish only classes, just to try to keep up and that takes away from everyone. Why not other languages?

Anyway I am not and was not trying to flame, I just attempted to answer the question to the best of my ability. If I were moving and asked someone about the area, I would want as many opinions for as many reasons as possible so that I could make my OWN decision. I would not wish to be spoon fed the opinions of others.

Wanttoteach, I do hope you are able to find what you are looking for....

I highly doubt that. Money is a universal language and all businesses are in business to earn money. I doubt that a business establishment is going to turn away customers and profit because someone doesn't speak Spanish.

Think as you wish Donna, I live here and eat out alot. I should know

ps: money may be the universal language but when the menu is in spanish and the language of the server does not match the language of the patron, money doesn't say too much at all. It isn't that they wouldn't have taken an order but they kept shaking their heads and shrugging at me and pointing to the menu which I could not read

Funny, because I've travelled all over Mexico and they take my money AND give me food despite the fact that I don't speak spanish and they don't speak english.

but did you know what you were ordering?

I shudder at the thought of eating tongue or something else more exotic than I wish because I don't know what I am looking at. No, there were no pictures on the menu.

I will not reply to any further comments due to the fact that I do not wish this to be about me, it is about wanttoteach.

As I said before, my comments were honest and not intended to flame. I am sorry so many of you have issues with this. I thought we still had a right to an opinion in this country.

Yes, Mexican food. :-) If you live in San Diego and don't know what most of the items are on a Mexican restaurant's menu, you gotta get out more. Just don't ask for Lengua or Cabeza and you'll be fine.

I took 2 years of latin in high school - the words for 'tongue' are pretty much the same in spanish, english, french, and Italian.

Lengua
Language
Linguistic

see the similarity?

Some act as if their right to an opinion is violated when someone replies with an opinion that differs from theirs.

This is a both sides of the fence thing; I'm not just picking on you.
