Thank you very much for this post, it helped a lot.

Sassberto is right on- commuting/moving to LA is the reality for many people moving here looking for white collar jobs- that's not to say there aren't opportunities in SD.

Generally speaking, If you do something that can be done here, there or anywhere i.e. Teachers, Lawyers, Doctors, police work, etc. your better off looking elsewhere. I've heard of different definitions for "sunshine tax" my definintion is employers prey on the weather and positive vibe that outsiders give San Diego the trade off to have this is a pay level that is not aligned with the cost of living here.

Like many have said before, when Cost of living comes into the discussion many folks are talking about Real Estate.

SD. suffers from the same problem as other vacation cities, ie. Honolulu or Miami. Wages are low compared to the cost of living. Thats because there is always a fresh crop of people coming to SD. who are willing to work for less. Also, SD. is not exactly a 'career' town. Sure you can make a career here but its not your typical 'Fortune 500' town. Employers know that SD. is desireable. They get hundreds of resumes for every position. That allows them to pay less and hire over qualified candidates for less money.
