that'd probably sum up my experience. i never saw anyone using nor was i ever solicited, but the boys' room seemed to frequently reek of pot (among the several other lovely fragrances a boys' high school bathroom will smell like, of course).

don't get me wrong, though. the schools are safe. i never once worried about crossing the wrong crowd or getting caught up in something bad. i think the worst that happened to me while at RB was when someone broke into my gym locker (that i left unlocked one day) and stole my watch. that's about it.

Thanks, that's good to know. I expect some degree of drug activities in just about any high schools around the country, but gang activities are something else...

According to 2007 Newsweek rankings of high schools, Westview did pretty good just about neck in neck with La Jolla High. While I don't take these rankings with a lot of faith, they still do serve to indicate something.

Thanks for all the replies and feedback. Turns out we decided on Encinitas after spending some time in the area in the past month. Just our personal preference in terms of the vibe of the town and the feel of LCC High. Encinitas is probably the best fit for this old skater/surfer anyway.
