I'd very much agree with sav858 regarding Encinitas and Solana Beach over Carlsbad. You're going to have a tough adjustment anyway just going from East to West (i've done the reverse migration), you mentioned "plastic" in your opening statement, well you're going to find plenty in Carlsbad, Del Mar, La Jolla, fill in the blanks North County beach town, etc. No offense guys, I lived there 25 years and loved it, but it is the phony capital of the world.

I have to agree again with sav858 with suggesting North PB. It's about a good of a balance between the 2 areas you're considering as you're going to find. Great beaches, great food, great "niche" stores, and a real chill atmoshpere without the pretention.

But like everyone else has said..you've got to visit before you choose. Good Luck!

Wow, north county beach towns are "the phony capital of the world?" Somebody better tell Hollywood, Miami Beach and Newport Beach that they're no longer number 1!

I'd call those spots more surreal than anything! Like I said man no offense intended, I owned my first home in your neighborhood (sorta, cardiff) for years and I love it, but I guess you have to leave the bubble to see it.

I'm not offended. I'm just shocked at the hyperbole you used, that's all. I have "left the bubble" and experienced far more of what you describe, that's why I found it so funny.

Fair enough, glad I could amuse you. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one brother.

I'm in San Diego now, staying in Pacific Beach. I've been to Carlsbad, La Jolla & Del Mar. I'm looking at a few places in Carlsbad, I really liked it a lot. It seems really mellow. Plus, my 80 yr old Mom liked the senior center! We saw a 3BR 2A house with ocean view (distant but visable), fireplace & a pool. It's $3250/month!!! But I guess you get what you pay for. Any feedback? It's about 10 minutes to "downtown" Carlsbad & 20 to beach. Is this rent about right for comprable home rentals?
Thanks!

Hi,
Have you considered Oceanside at all? Oceanside it much cheaper than Carlsbad. I do not know to much about beachfront rentals but they do keep advertising for a new condo oceanfront/view in Oceanside right on Pacific Coast Hwy.
As far as the gloom comments, we live right by the beach in Oceanside and it's pretty much always sunny here

Glad you made it! Since you are zeroing in on Carlsbad, make sure you check out La Costa and Aviara if you are interested in newer. Encinitas, Leucadia and Cardiff are older and funkier. Carmel Valley, Del Mar Heights and Torrey Hills are all nice and newer and located just south/east of Del Mar.
