Default Living with Convicts and Inmates and...

I'm planning on moving to San Diego this summer, but I'm frankly more worried than excited... What are your thoughts on the impact of letting these convicts go early to save the state government some money?

As far as I know, the prisoners released are non-violent offenders, so I am not that worried. So as long as you are not prone to leaving valuables in your car, walking around in shady places by yourself, or not securing your home, you should be fine.

According to this morning's CNN report, a lot of these so-called "non-violent" inmates could very well be violent criminals who were put in jail for lesser charges because the police couldn't get them on more serious offenses. Whether this is true or not, all the burden's on hard working citizens to fend for themselves.

Maybe Giuliani's New York City is safer than California since he and Chiefs Bratton and Kelly swept up the minor offenders (squeegie guys and turnstile jumpers) with the hypothesis that these offences trickled up to become more serious. Don't worry so much like most of America and live fully and smartly (please don't carry firearms like the nuts); at least you have a safe car.

Well those crimes do certainly suck if they are perpetrated on you, and I'd rather people who commit those crimes not hang around our streets, but they are also things that can be avoided without too much effort and common sense. I'm more worried about the government balancing its budget and functioning properly.

San Diego has one of the higher property crime rates in the country... especially car theft. It's usually in the top 5 for cities with over a million in population.

If balancing our budget means releasing thieves from jail... we are in very deep trouble as a society.

They're all supposedly nonviolent offenders so I doubt there will be much impact especially since the standard sentences are so harsh. Really all they've done is let nonviolent offenders go with sentences they would have gotten in other states anyway. Most of them were white collar criminals or minor drug offenders.

Err, no.

United States cities by crime rate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

We'll ignore violent crime since you've already, correctly, stipulated that San Diego has a very low violent crime rate for its size and instead deal with properity crime, which you singled out.

3,174.2 property crimes total makes San Diego in the bottom half of the major cities in America for property crime and that is amazing considering San Diego has twice the population of many of the cities on the list. Even total motor vehicle theft is middle of the pack with a per capita number among the lowest of major American cities. Wiki doesn't lie, my friend.
