What college major do you feel with hold up well in the coming years in San Diego? I know the economy is "strange" in San Diego all told. What field do you think will be around for a while locally?

My sister can't quantify an appropriate major but she (and I) love san diego. Thought maybe this could help solidify, or at least point her in the right direction, considering living in San Diego is the only thing she is really passionate about.

Thanks.

Biotech. Literally 1 in 4 companies in Sorrento Valley, UTC and La Jolla are Biotech related, if not more.

You can't study "biotech" in college, as that is a catch-all term for industries around a collection of disciplines, Biology, in particular genetics and microbiology. Be aware, that entry into high-salary biotech jobs will almost always require a PhD, and even that may not be enough.

In my opinion, Biotech is not nearly the regional economic driver that it is made out to be. Most biotechs have lost money for a decade or more and continue to lose money. They tend to employ foreign workers (mostly Chinese) on visas much moreso than local talent as well. The Pharmaceutical industry is much more viable and props up the balance sheets of many small biotechs.

Electrical Engineering is also a good one, especially if you can focus on RF, ASIC, board design, comms protocols, RTOS, sensors, etc. There is a lot of defense and wireless-related work that tends to overlap in terms of skillsets. There is also some work in bio-medical device engineering here.

Another option is Healthcare management, and healthcare information systems (maybe an MIS discipline). San Diego has a large network of Hospitals and healthcare facilities for a city of it's size.

The best major is what you want to do with your career life. It doesn't make any difference what the economy is like in San Diego if you end up with a degree in something you do not like.
