Can someone post a photo of a classical Hoffman hovel, along with the definition?

I had to google that one to see what you were talking about! I only found one reference, and it sounds like it just means a lot in the middle of a neighborhood with historical homes, that has an apartment complex on it. They're all over San Diego, and they always make me sad, since you know there used to be a cute little old house on that lot at one time, and as an old house lover, I'm not in favor of tearing them down - especially not when they were replaced by an ugly four or six-plex.

They are more commonly known as "dingbats" and have a bit of a fan following out there...

That's what I thought they were and they are unsightly. Are they uniformly poorly constructed?

"Huffman hovel" (better known as "Huffman six-pack") is more specific than "dingbat".

They don't look all that bad, actually some of them depending on the design look pretty cool. The majority of the Mid-City has Huffman complexes. I would prefer those types of buildings over the horrendous styling of todays modern architecture that's been spreading around SD for awhile now.

To the OP, it's hUffman, not hOffman.

While the Dingbat closely resembles the Huffman Hovel, it isn't quite the same, as Esmith pointed out in his pictures.

As for sdlife619's statement that, "They don't look all that bad," that's just plain nuts. You have to see them in context, paired up with a couple of small but attractive bungalow houses on either side to see how they have destroyed the urban fabric of the city. The Huffman has been outlawed in San Diego for good reason, but if I recall correctly sdlife619 likes his neighborhoods gritty, trashy, prostitute-filled, and rundown.

Man, I'm feeling cranky today. Discussing the Huffman will do that to a person.

I've been wondering this for a while too, and now I know exactly what a Huffman Hovel is since they were all over University Heights. They look like cheap, rundown motels that were plopped down in the wrong place. It's pretty cool to know their history now though.

Here are a couple:
4243 39th St Unit B, San Diego, CA 92105 | MLS# 100013029
4921 Trojan Ave #2, San Diego, CA 92115 | MLS# 100019489

It doesn't look all that bad, but from my experience home shopping, pictures can be pretty deceiving
