Word of warning - if your car was purchased in the past year, this God-awful state government and the hideous monsters at the DMV are going to try to extract a sales tax out of you, and it's pretty steep. The law exists to prevent people from going to a place like Oregon where there is no sales tax and buying a car. OK, I understand that, but they nail everyone.

I recently went through this. At first they tried to charge me $2000 to register my 8 month old car (I didn't have the sales agreement). When I was able to find the document they still wanted over $800, eventhough I had already paid a $1200 sales tax in my old state.

Oh, and here's where it gets really good. Sales tax is naturally based on the sales price right? Nope, not in CA. They calculate the tax based on the sticker price or whatever price they think the car should have been. I got a great deal on the car plus a trade in allowance. The CA DMV basically assessed a value of $5000 more than I paid for the car. And then OF COURSE acted rude when I questioned this.

I am bound and determined to f-k this state out of as much money as is humanly possible. The state government here is literally intolerable.

AAA would have been a lot easier to deal with.

And I've heard that vehicle registrations are supposed to go up next year.

I am relocating to Orange County from Canada and will bring a new car that we purchased last May. I have paid 13% sales tax already. Will I also be asked to pay sales tax to register the car in OC?

Yes, but you need to post this in an Orange County forum. San Diego isn't in Orange County.
