There are jobs for sure, but the days of combing through help wanted ads and jobs boards are behind us for the foreseeable future unless you possess highly specialized skills.

The best way to find jobs is to work through people you know. I know it's been said before, but the best jobs rarely advertised. And if they are advertised, it's only done to satisfy regulatory compliance of some sort. Work your network.

True, but also not true. In 2007, I got a marketing job because a girl who worked there (small niche legal marketing firm) was roommates with someone I was working with. Fast forward two years, I got laid off Feb. 2, started my new job (another director of marketing gig) on March 22 after seeing the job posted on Craigslist. So ... while you certainly have a better chance of landing a job through networking, it isn't the only way even in these crazy times.

The job market is tough here even in the best of times. It all boils down to education, skills and experience. If you have the education, skills, and experience that is in demand, you will find a job. If you don't, you won't. It's just that simple.

San Diego remains a military town. With almost 25% of jobs in San Diego being directly related to the military, that might be a good place to start if you don't have the job skills or education to break into the relatively small private sector.

SDMAC unveils results of economic impact study (http://www.navycompass.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2116: sdmac-unveils-results-of-economic-impact-study&catid=46&Itemid=584 - broken link)

"The military in San Diego County created or supported 328,080 jobs, or approximately 23 percent of all jobs in the county,” Nufer said. “Direct defense spending was $16.1 billion, spread over procurement, retirement and veterans benefits, civilian salaries, active-duty salaries, and government purchase card expenses."

Interesting report, Sassberto. I'm surprised to read that the military's presence is still so significant, and that it will only increase in the years ahead.

As far as I know, however, San Diego's economy is a lot more diversified today than it was 20+ years ago.

Things do seem to be looking up these days. However I still know many younger people who are doing part time small jobs, waiting to get back into the corporate world again. Hope the upward swing quickens it pace.

Military don't pay much until you're in there at least a decade. That's why they can afford to just keep hiring - you really make pennies for the first years. Yes, you get the living and the tax free shopping and all that. But it's still a hard lifestyle - nevermind getting yelled at daily in BT. I told myself that if I was unable to find a job I would consider the Air Force, which has inspired me to get specialized skillsets to keep competitive.
