When my grandchildren come visiting, I usually take them to Del Mar or La Jolla Shores. They love it there. Coronado is a great option too. Not too sure about the Mariott properties though.

All good choices from everyone. How about Torrey Pine State Park? Beach on the bottom of the hill and best State Park with the ocean front view, top of the hill. A few trails to hike. There are public restrooms, one at the bottom and top. Bring $10 fee for parking or locate a free public parking along the beach. Any beach day is a good day. ;-)

Hands down the best beach in the area is Coronado beach. It's the third best beach in the country according to the rankings and it has the classic huge white sand beach with family friendly atmosphere many people seem to be looking for. The second best beach, IMHO, is in Del Mar.

San Diego beaches are kind of like snowflakes. No two are really the same. Some beaches are great for families (playground equipment, snack stand, easy parking, safe water without big waves, lifeguard towers, etc.) Some are great for surfing only, but not so much for sitting out with the family. Some are great for snorkeling, or kayaking, or paddle boarding, or laying around naked, or whatever. I think it's great there is so much diversity, but it makes it hard to name a best beach.

True. Coronado is quite pretty but water is colder.

I love Carlsbad beach for the small town feel. The beaches are nice and everything is within easy walking distance. The Village has charming shops and restaurants, and the only authentic Danish bakery in California. They are to die for!!! Plus there is Legoland (which just opened the water park) and Pick-Your-Own strawberry fields, and the Carlsbad Outlet nearby.

Beach appears to be right by big smokestack, powerplant; so much for charm. What is name of Danish bakery?

Does anyone give me some feedback, regarding the Dolphin Motel. Is it near one of the beaches.

The Dolphin Motel is in Point Loma and within walking distance of the sportfishing docks near Shelter Island. It's not near any beaches.
