San Marcos Unified is a very well run school district...
low income and english learners do not inhibit their schools from performing at high levels. Its a testament to all the hard work parents and administrators put into education.
Vista Unified used to be the same way back in the day.
oh unions...

San Marcos High is a combination of ESL students and upper middle class/rich kids from the newer communities in San Marcos and Carlsbad. When you look at non-hispanics, I beleive San Marcos High is the highest rated (or close to it) in all of SD county. Vista, Oceanside don't have the influx of top rated students, and San Marcos High was a pit before these communities were built.

Yes, when you look at non-hispanic whites, things look quite different across the board:
La Costa Canyon High 841
Carlsbad High 834
San Marcos High 877
Mission Hills High 857
Rancho Buena Vista High 832
Vista High 829
Oceanside High 814
El Camino High 829
Escondido High 814
San Pasqual High 840
The rest of North County:
Rancho Bernardo High 842
Mt Carmel High 822
Westview High 841
Torrey Pines High 852
Poway High 874
Ramona High 777
North San Diego:
La Jolla High 871
University City High 862
Mira Mesa High 830
Scripps Ranch High 878 (!)
Clairemont High 767
Serra High 798
Central San Diego:
Point Loma High 827
Henry High 818
Coronado High 872
Hoover High - no data (not enough white students)
Lincoln High - no data (not enough white students)
Morse High - no data (not enough white students)

But, of course, as everyone knows, Poway and Del Mar schools are the best and they are the only ones worth considering.

not really. White kids at the school are largely middle class with an average number of upper middle class, and a small number of rich kids. Not even close to having the same level of affluence as Carlsbad, San Dieguito, or Poway high schools. A large number of wealthy kids in the La Costa, San Elijo, and Rancho Carrillo area of SMUSD actually end up getting a district transfer to Carlsbad or San Dieguito
The interesting thing is that the API score of San Marcos High is likely to increase a lot more in upcoming years. San Elijo Middle, which sends all its kids to SMHS has a white population of around 750 (tested grades 6-8), while the actual high school only has 450 (tested grades 9-11). There is going to be a significant increase in the percentage of white kids at SMHS once San Elijo is built out and all the children grow up- meaning that the overall school API is going to be a lot closer to 877. It will probably end up passing Carlsbad (which Mission Hills already did), La Costa Canyon, and some other reputable schools in wealthy areas.
San Marcos caucasians come from hard working families that instill these values into education. Also, SMUSD schools are much more strict than nearby districts. There is less room for screwing around. Kids from wealthier families think they are entitled to everything and put less emphasis on education because they know daddy can always pay for them.
you see a lot less of this in san marcos.
i realize that this is a huge generalization, but believe it or not it contributes to SMHS high test scores and LCCs low test scores (considering its affluence)
There is ,however, a huge difference between hispanics and caucasians smhs.

Why does "everyone know" that the Poway and Del Mar schools are the best [I am assuming the writer means SD] ? We are moving from the East coast and would like to settle into an excellent school district. Hope it's ok that I am responding to an old thread......

They have the best reputation in San Diego~ high graduation rates, college attendance, sports programs, etc. The Poway and San Dieguito districts are arguably the best in the county. Families usually locate to these areas for the primary purpose of sending their kids to these schools. For example, many families that send their kids to Torrey Pines move from houses in other cities to small apartments (especially the complex across the street) just so that their kids attend. Poway is by far a more reasonably priced area to live in and it has a nice family environment as well. A general rule of thumb is to follow the highest API scores for the more reputable schools. New scores were released this week. these are the highest performing high schools north of the 52, and basically in San Diego County(by API):
892 Canyon Crest (San Dieguito)
877 Scripps Ranch (San Diego)
871 Torrey Pines (San Dieguito)
856 Del Norte (Poway)
856 Poway (Poway)
854 Rancho Bernardo (Poway)
851 Westview (Poway)
845 San Dieguito (San Dieguito)
843 Mission Hills (San Marcos)
841 La Jolla (San Diego)
830 San Marcos (San Marcos)
827 Mission Vista (Vista)
823 Mira Mesa (San Diego)
818 Mt Carmel (Poway)
815 La Costa Canyon (San Dieguito)
812 Carlsbad (Carlsbad)
797 University City (San Diego)
Highest performing school districts are San Dieguito, Poway, San Marcos, and Carlsbad. The San Diego Unified schools mentioned also happen to be the highest performing in that district.

Thank you so much for this information rhanifin! I am so glad to see San Dieguito schools rated so high as we are considering moving to the Encinitas/La Costa area.
We are moving to ocean hills area and we will be zoned for Rancho Buena Vista high school. My son wad also accepted to Mission Vista High School. Which is better in your opinion?
Mission Vista didn't exist when I was in high school. I lived on the border of SM Unified & Vista Unified. My house was actually closer to RBV, but it didn't have a great reputation at the time. Correct me if I'm wrong, but these were the general feelings about RBV:
Pros:
International Baccalaureate school
large school= larger selection of classes
Cons:
Overcrowded, easy to get lost in the masses
Conflicts between teachers/admin/district
Others:
Decent sports
Test scores are just one indication of performance. Here are the updated scores for north San Diego County:
