In Texas, I have to buy my health insurance from the Texas Risk Pool because I cannot buy group (self-employed) and I have a pre-existing condition so insurance carriers would reject me on that basis. Does California have anything like this and if so, what is it called so I can google? TRP is good insurance, but expensive.

Thanks!

Medi-Cal is California's Medicaid program. This is a public health insurance program which provides needed health care services for low-income individuals including families with children, seniors, persons with disabilities, foster care, pregnant women, and low income people with specific diseases such as tuberculosis, breast cancer or HIV/AIDS. Medi-Cal is financed equally by the State and federal government.

You can go online and see if you qualify. Since I don't have medical insurance, I go across the border where it costs less.

Maybe I will go across the border, I've never done that since I don't live near one. But I may not have been clear: I am insured and pay for the insurance all byself. Since I am self-employed, I don't qualify for "group" where they can't, by law, reject you. I was rejected trying to buy an individual policy so now I go the the Texas Risk Pool where I pay a high premium for health insurance. From what you tell me, it sounds like Medi-Cal is like Medicaid, or CHIPS, here in Texas.

I will figure it out when I get there. Thank you.
