Hi I have a question about the rock music scene in SF....as in, does one even exist?

I've heard so much that there's not much of a music scene (or support for up and coming bands) in SF and I was wondering for those of you who are living there if this is true or not.

I know there's also a lot of film festivals and such in SF...is it safe to say SF and Bay Area and great places for local artists (photographers, etc)?

It's either Los Angeles or San Francisco and I'm just trying to learn some more about SF

(Any great advice from ppl who have lived in BOTH would be nice)

Thanks!

I was a working artist in LA for several years until a couple years ago when we moved to SF. There are way more jobs for creative people in LA. SF is more for tech and finance. Much fewer opportunities here, unless you are into web design.

I don't know but here in the Bay Area it seems like every other young guy I meet is in a band. That doesn't mean much though.

There are a few major bands located in the Bay Area (Green Day, Metallica, Rogue Wave and a few others) but there really aren't as many as you'd expect in an area of 6 million people. Seems like some bands move to LA or other areas eventually. I don't know why this is, there are a lot of music venues all over the Bay Area. My theory about the low number of bands is that there are so many bands in places like NYC and LA because that is where a lot of record labels are, and it's easier to get things done with the label if you can meet them face to face, and there aren't many major corporate or independent record labels based here.

So there are a lot of places that you can see bands, but there isn't really much of a local band scene. Seems like places like Portland OR and Austin TX are better for that while being much smaller than the Bay Area. The high cost of living here probably doesn't help bands that are starting out.

Unfortunately what you are witnessing is the after math of the DotCom/DotBomb here is SF music wise.

There are plenty of bands but they are more spread out (moved to East Bay mostly) since a lot of musicians were priced out of apts and loft spaces when the dot commie yuppie types came into SF. The gentrification of the bulk of SOMA blew away the bulk of the live music venues as well, although plenty are still standing.
It does seem as of late that the whole scene is going into a rebirth and it looks quite promising.
