Default Where to stay in SF?

We met some awfully nice Aussies in Mexico last week and their travel plans include some time in SF. They were going to rent a car there and have plans for going to Monterrey for a couple of days and then Yosemite and on to Las Vegas.

What areas of the city would you recommend for them to stay? I think they would do just fine staying down the peninsula near CalTrain or BART but I haven't been around the city very much in years.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

How much money do they want to spend? I agree with you about the peninsula. There are lots of motels along El Camino Real and at SFO airport in Millbrae near the BART/Caltrain station. It would seem cheaper to me than some place near Union Square or Fisherman's Wharf. Parking could be an issue in SF - some hotels charge for that.

I've actually gotten some really good deals staying at one of the nicer hotels right near the airport (Clarion, Marriott, Hyatt etc). Not the most scenic area of course, but easy access into the city if they don't actually want to stay/pay the cost of actually being IN the City.

Best Western on 7th at Minna is a reasonable rate, convenient for both using the car as well as doing carless stuff and walking distance to the various places on mid Folsom.

Not sure the age range in question here although some "older Xer" friends of ours stayed there and loved it.
