Why is this city so.....gross?

Homeless, litter, grime, crime, general filth of this dysfunctional dump of a city is starting to bother me. I lived in Boston and it's roughly the same size of SF, but it was pristine. Even living in Santa Monica was more pleasant.

Where does the smell come from? Homeless people?

He's right though. Have you guys walked down Mission Street between 5th and 3rd? It literally smells like a public bathroom except in the open air. It's pretty disgusting.

OK, I'll bite! Boston, by nature of it's climate a) has fewer homeless (and those that live there spend a good portion of the year in shelters, not on the street) and b) get's cleaned up on a regular basis by snowplows, spring melt, etc.

Usually the pot smoke cancels out the smell of the homeless. Why do you think we burn so much incense here?

Silly topic, but it really depends on where you are. Maybe get out of 18th and Mission or wherever you are. Yes the ghetto areas smell and for whatever reason people are more likely to go to the bathroom (#1 AND number 2.....ugh!) here....I've never seen people do that in an American city. Also it rarely rains here and never rains at all in the summer so you don't get nature's cleaning service. But if you go outside of the 1/3rd or 1/4th of the city that is really grubby, the city is pretty clean and doesn't smell at all.

Meanwhile a lot of the big old cities in the East can really STINK, seems like 300+ years of humanity starts seeping out after a while.

When will these troll threads stop? Seriously, the SF forum is hardly even worth checking anymore.

I went walking on Saturday on top of Market Street around the Ferry Plaza Farmers market. It was dirty at best (pier close to water). There were no homless except for 2 adn I saw of them very calmly pi$$ around the corner. There was garbage everywhere...just my experience. Like any city tehre are places one rather not be but I didnt know Farmers Market at the ferry would be an issue. I am from Sydney, Australia so I can easily compare bigger cities....
