My mother's best friend lives ON Sequoia (where the fire is blazing), and she just called me in a panic. We can't reach him on his cell phone, so I called Kaiser to see if he'd been admitted... they don't have any names yet, so said they'd call me within the hour (whether or not he's there). OMG, I hope everyone is okay - this is bad.

My mom wants me to drive down there, since I'm only a few minutes away, but I'm afraid I won't be able to get close enough. Should I try?? We're really worried about him and his house!

The devastation of fires gets to me more than anything. I really hope people and their animals can get out. Lives are more important than property.

Sounds like a gas explosion -- I'd stay away Giz -- they won't let you near there anyway if his house is involved....

I really hope they're ok! Good wishes to them!

Thanks. They said roads are closed around it, so I guess it would be futile to head down. Please keep him (and everyone else involved) in your thoughts/prayers... he lost his wife not long ago, so this is the last thing he needs to deal with.

The local LA channels are covering the fire even though it is in the Bay Area; wild fires are a sobering reminder that autumn is here!

P.S. The fire/police sirens are going crazy in my neighborhood right now, so I guess they're going to help... I'm right off 280, so it's pretty close even though we're in the city.

Yes, but this is not a wild fire... at first they thought it was a plane crash, but now they're saying it was probably a gas explosion.

Isn't the fire out of control? Then it is a wild fire. It doesn't matter what the cause was. A few weeks ago thunderstorms triggered several wild fires in Southern California but the humid air helped the firemen get them under control before they could do too much damage. Sometimes a simple thing like a car backfiring or even a lawn mower spark can start fire wilds.
