Hi I am moving to CA at the end of the month and was trying to figure out how much it will cost to register my car in CA.

The DMVs calculator only seems to pertain to purchased vehicles not leased ones. I tried calling the DMV but they basically told me to use the calculator.

Does anyone know how it works with a lease?

Thanks,

-eric-

With a lease, it's called "capitalized cost" instead of purchase price. Refer to your contract.

@sonarrat

So does that mean I would have to pay sales tax on the vehicle when I register it, or would I only be paying the registration fee?

On a lease, in CA, you pay tax on the monthly payment.

Use the "nonresident vehicles" calculator.

@1200RT

Thanks, yes, I used the nonresident vehicle calculator, but it seems to be geared for purchased vehicles not leases. As I understand it with a lease you are taxed monthly on the portion of the vehicle you are using. The calculator is basing its calculations on a purchase.

Registration has nothing to do with tax. As far as registration goes:

purchase=lease

What is the year and make/model of your car?

It will be the same price leased or owned, not complicated at all.

Actually it does.
Base registration is around $80 a year. The rest is a tax on the value. Other states include this tax on the property tax, in CA it is included with registration. This why every two years registration will decrease. My 1974 VW thing costs $75 or so. My wife's Ford Escape is $350.

My statement was more along the lines of .... your registration payment will not include a lump sum of sales tax based on the value of the vehicle, which seemed like the OP thought -as if you're bringing in a new car to the state, and need to pony up 9.75%

I should also add that ..... registration IS a tax plain and simple, but to simplify things, i think the OP was interested in sales tax associated with a lease.
