I wouldn't say Hayward is dangerous, just too melancholy for my tastes. Maybe to some who are unfamiliar, this sort of atmosphere gives it the appearance of being dangerous.

Most neighborhoods are actually quite nice and personally I've always loved looking at the scenic backdrop of the foothills and Monument Peak. My parents live in the Sunnyhills neighborhood which is one of the oldest, least nice looking neighborhoods in Milpitas. Even there I feel completely safe and crime is almost non-existent. When I lived there I'd regularly walk my dog through Sunnyhills park and along the Hetch Hetchy waterway trail late at night and feel perfectly safe. Milpitas tends to have a bad reputation, but it's really not deserved.

It was a play on words if you missed it. There are MANY pits of the Bay Area. Probably close to half of the Bay is dumpy. I love the Great Mall. I worked in Milpitas and it was like any other place. I just remember it as not the bestest, nor is San Jose.

What I don't like about Hayward is there isn't much to do. It is a bit generic. But pretty well located to most of the Bay Area. There are some oddly dangerous neighborhoods. More than I ever realized. I guess in the flat lands. More people I know that live in Hayward have had incidents close by or personally happen to them versus where I live in Oakland. But I live in a high-end neighborhood in Oakland. I guess I am more surprised that Hayward wasn't able to cash in on the boom as much as let's say Dublin. Downtown has potential, but it is on the far end of turning around. The rest of town is varying degrees of suburban and boring. With more ethnic restaurants.

Besides some enclaves in the East Bay (Danville area, WC), Mountain View, San Mateo, some parts of S.F, and Marin County (except Marin city), the Bay Area is pretty dumpy.

Hayward is the typical post inustrial burb. Infact its the poster child. It was built by a man who more or less perfected tract home communities in San Lorenzo and Hayward (and actually influenced the more famous levitt town).

Hayward grew to prowess in ww2 when new workers and manufacturers came to town. I need not give a history lesson, but the decline of america as a manufacturing giant and illegal immigration have more or less made the town what it is today. Which for the most part ranges from "meh" to "ew" (with exception of the hayward hills of course)

lol...

Hayward is somewhat dumpy in parts but very, very, very little of it is the ghetto. Cherryland and right by Southland Mall are the worst areas... basically, don't live between 880 and 238 and don't live next to 880 towards Southland.

Isn't Southland pretty much across the street from Chabot College?
