I live by the lake according to those listing agents. I live a solid mile, mile and a quarter. I'd take it with a grain of salt. I am sure I live close to Rockridge too.... but that is more like 1.5 miles. Maps don't lie is all I have to say....

(For the OP) here's a more visual way of showing you what others are trying to convey... Oakland does not have a single face. In a single neighborhood you can have completely different income levels coexisting. For example, take the Seminary neighborhood... above Foothill Blvd, the neighborhood looks like this:

That last pic is on Seminary Ave literally 4 blocks up the street from Foothill Blvd. Once you get to Foothill Blvd, however...

I took all of the pictures... the Foothill Blvd pics pictured above are not even representative of how truly desolate the area is for the most part... most of the stretch of Foothill Blvd that I walked past wasn't even camera safe because of all the lookouts/stoop statues. This area is the beginning of whats known as Deep East Oakland. Stay the **** away from this area. That being said, there are a lot of nice neighborhoods in East Oakland, one of them being Maxwell Park, which is right next to where the first 3 pics were taken. It's next to Mills College (West of 55th Ave) and the houses are very well preserved 1920's-1940's houses. The neighborhoods above 580 and above MacArthur Blvd West of High St. are nice as well. Ultimately you'd need to find someone who could give you a tour so you get a better idea of where and where not to look... you could start in the stickied Oakland pics thread though. It'll give you an idea of what Oakland looks like across all the social classes.

I will make it even easier for you

Most places East of 580 are fine

Most places West of Market/Telegraph/San Pablo are patchy at best, ghetto/dangerous at worst.

AVOID PLACES BETWEEN 580/880 BEGINNING AT AROUND SEMINARY AVE, ESPECIALLY WHERE SEMINARY/FOOTHILL MEET. In general, once you've passed the Coliseum, there's nothing to see until youve gotten past San Leandro. Unless you're looking for trouble, there's no reason you'd be anywhere near these neighborhoods in the first place.
