We hired a tandem as part of a bike/ferry package. We rode over the GG to Sausalito, and had a wonderful ride on the return ferry. It was a fantastic experience to ride across the GG; the only downer was when we somehow managed to take a wrong path once off the bridge, and had to carry the bike back to the correct path. (It was extremely rocky and we were at a no-thru street. It's a skill, folks)!
(We'll be back in SF this December and hope to do it again, minus the getting lost part. We'll see).
Yeah, I see a lot of tourists biking along the path from Fort Mason to GC. Biking is a great way to get a feel of any city. Walking doesn't cover much area and too tiring, while driving is too suffocating and stressful.

Yay! Hopefully, bike culture will even stronger now with Gap's advertising. Hope Levi's gets on board as well.

Isn't SJ a big city bike?

I really don't like the hills of SF, but I do enjoy the neighborhoods and other fellow cyclists.

I enjoy riding on Market St. recently. It's a little challenge because of the rough pavement and the many cars, but it's a long street that you can keep on going.

Happy riding!

I guess that SF has been putting in a lot of new bike lanes other than the ones on Market (I think they were held up by some dumb lawsuit?), how are they? When I had a bike in SF about 6 years ago there weren't any lanes other than maybe the ones on Market and one on Valencia, and most of the time you had to just take your chances on the street which was annoying because the streets are narrow and have a lot of traffic and parked cars, like on 18th street which was a major route for me.

As I said in my other post a while ago in this topic, I've really been enjoying biking around Oakland and Berkeley and so on, there are lanes all over the place and cars really give you a lot of space.

There have been improvements but biking in SF will always be in congested streets. I bike commute from sunset to SOMA and for the most part I have bike lanes or I go on narrow streets where cars can't go fast.

Market is pretty bad between 7th to Embarcadero because there are no bike lanes. But Market has most bike traffic and there is some comfort in that. Most of SOMA is pretty bad except bike lanes of Howard and Folsom. Most of the aggressive drivers are typically in SOMA.

Hmm, is this different from Critical Mass?

In any case I live in Oakland now so it's not really doable for me. I did Critical Mass in SF once which was pretty fun.
