Default Need help finding German Deli items... East Bay or SF

Expecting guests from Bavaria this Holiday Season and would like to have a few German Specialties on hand...

Anyone know local sources for:

Bavarian Smoked Speck Ham or Bauernschinken?

Stiegl Beer from Salzburg... (Bevmo used to stock... have not seen it recently)

One group arriving from Salzburg Austria and another from Munich Germany...

East Bay locations preferred... I do have one lead I have not checked... Lehr's on Church Street in SF.

Try the Munchner Haus in Fremont (39212 Fremont Blvd
Fremont, CA 94538-1318; (510) 793-6411). Might be a bit of a hike for you though.

Also good - Dittmer's Gourmet Meats & Wurst Haus in Mountain View. They smoke their own sausages!

I don't have any recommendations for SF or the East Bay, but there is Ditmer's in Mountain View. They're a genuine German Deli and are known for their sausages. They're located on San Antonio Rd., between El Camino Real and Middlefield Rd. I used to eat there quite a bit when I worked in the area and they were always packed during lunch hour. You may want to check them out.

...oh, I see somebody beat me to that recommendation while I was in the middle of writing this.

Hopefully they will enjoy what you have on hand, but frankly I don't really get the point of offering someone something from where they're from if they've traveled a long distance, you'd think they'd want to try some stuff from where they're visiting. If someone was visiting me from Maine I wouldn't scramble to provide them with lobster rolls and Moxie soda. Maybe offer them some of what the Bay Area has to offer, like Sierra Nevada, some Old Rasputin, some California wine, some sandwiches made with Boudin bread, etc, alongside the German stuff. Actually now I'm hungry, that would make a nice combination. Some stuff from the US is crappy compared with German stuff, but some stuff is pretty good.

On the other hand if someone has been traveling a long time and is a bit homesick, or if they're just really hard to please and don't like to try new things, getting them something familiar will make them pretty happy.

Gourmet Haus Staudt OK, it's in Redwood City, not the east bay.

Russian Butcher Shop on Geary at 21st Ave. has a lot of Prussian and Estonian stuff, I used to pick up ring bologna just like what I used to get in PA Dutch Country. There has to be a place for beer I think you're not trying. Baked goods can make you cry. The Asian places look good but they just don't taste right. I used to get a lot of german goodies in the military commissaries if you know a retiree.

Appears the peninsula is leaps ahead of the East Bay...

There was a time when the East Bay's Fruitvale District was the Hub of the German Bay Area Community...

The Bavarians always go out of their way when I'm visiting... Last time it was "American" style Pizza one night in Salzburg... very good and another night it was Mexican in Munich.

Corona Beer in the export bottle cost more than twice the price of a 1/2 liter Stiegl Beer in Austria... the world is getting smaller all the time.

I'm expecting at least a Kilo of Milka and Rittersport Chocolate and kids "Surprise Eggs"

Six years ago, I took the Salzburg group to Death Valley... they marveled just being there... I joked and said, "All you need now is a Steigl Beer" they scolded me and said I was being cruel... little did they know I had a 6 pack of Steigl on ice that I had picked up at Beverages and More... the look on their faces was priceless and they still talk about it today...

My German parents go to a Polish delicatessen on Monument Blvd in Concord (if that's close to you) that has a fair number of German products and decent sausage selections. Lehr's in SF is good. You can also call Schmidt's restaurant in SF and ask them, because they sell some products (though not so much Bavarian) and bring sausage in from Dittmer's. How is Trumer Pils? They operate in Salzburg and opened a second brewing facility in Berkeley.

Try Euromix in Oakland. A bit tricky to find parking, but lots of random european stuff. Parking can be a bit tricky. It is also right next to a good Ethiopian restaurant. (And Fenton's is a block away)

Chowhound:Euromix Delicatessen - rworange? (long) - San Francisco Bay Area - Chowhound
Yelp: Euromix Delicatessen - North Oakland - Oakland, CA
