This is like saying alcohol should be ban or gambling or whatever. No, people should be educated so they know what is good for their bodies, how often we can abuse our bodies and what the consequences are and let people live their lives.
Nita
I agree with you on both your posts nita (and with SF no doubt lol). Like I said, stuff like this makes it very hard for me to defend SF and I want to but haven't yet found a way to do so. Have we become so helpless that we need to be told what and how to do everything? Like really?
Ugh. Can we please spend some of the effort we put into banning the sale of happy meals and flavored cigarettes or trying to ban the sale of pets in San Francisco into improving the quality of public education, keeping people from spraypainting up the back of the 14 Mission bus, and keeping homeless people from peeing on every exposed surface between Market and Geary, Mason and Van Ness?
All this said, the measure doesn't explicitly ban the sale of Happy Meals: it lays down requirements for them to include a toy:

The meals would also have to contain a beverage that's not loaded with sugar or fat.
It also notes that it will be revisited on the 9th, and if it is passed, wouldn't go into effect until Dec 2011; plenty of time for McDonald's and Burger King to file an appeal.
But as jeffredo noted, it's not like there's a McDonald's on every corner here. It's also not like there's a kid on every corner in San Francisco... I'm actually surprised they didn't ban Alpo dog food in the ruling since it seems like that's more applicable to SF... and have they taken a look at the kids in SF lately??? The kids in SF are way the hell fitter on average than the kids in most cities and suburbs in the US I've been to anyway!
County officials vote to ban toys and other promotions that restaurants offer with high-calorie children’s meals.
April 28, 2010|By Sharon Bernstein, Los Angeles Times
Happy Meal toys and other promotions that come with high-calorie children's meals will soon be banned in parts of Santa Clara County unless the restaurants meet nutritional guidelines approved Tuesday by the county Board of Supervisors.
"This ordinance prevents restaurants from preying on children's' love of toys" to sell high-calorie, unhealthful food, said Supervisor Ken Yeager, who sponsored the measure. "This ordinance breaks the link between unhealthy food and prizes."
Are THEY a bunch of idiots as well? Hmm?
They make all those fun electronic gadgets the world loves to buy.
Or is it just because SF did it you feel you need to bag on them?
Silicon Valley banned it first. What can you say about that?

This is just another example of why San Francisco specifically, and the Bay Area in general, is the laughingstock of most of the world.
It's typical of a liberal government to not hold people personally responsible for their actions, but to go after some corporate entity that's simply providing a service.
I suspect there's a heck of a lot of empty calories & fat content in MEXICAN FOOD, plus there's the huge, ongoing issue of candies imported from Mexico having lead content, etc. but how many of you that the powers that be in San Francisco will dare say anything negative about Mexican food, let-alone take action regarding it?

Had I known about it I would have said the same thing.
Good grief, folks. Did no-one read past the headline? I know C-D is famous for it's mouthbreathers, but this takes the cake.
No-one BANNED Happy Meals. You can still get one in San Francisco.
What they did is legislate that meals that don't meet certain caloric and nutritional standards can not be accompanied by a give-away or toy. McDonalds isn't stupid, they know that kids can be trained early to chose their food, and anyone with kids knows how hard it is to fight that juggernaut. It's the same reason cartoon characters aren't allowed to advertise cigarettes anymore in a lot of places.

Somehow this 'clarification' does not make this idiotic petty meddling by the stupidvisors in private lives any more palatable. Especially considering SF problems and priorities.

The 'world' as you put it adores San Francisco, which is quite possibly the most well-liked US City in the world
Its the white, racist, neoconservative, corporatewhores in backwater America that dislikes us. And I consider their hatred of us to be a badge of honor.
