Oakland is actually less affordable than San Francisco when it comes to housing and income.

Oakland Median Income (2008): $48,596
Oakland Median Median Home Price 2008 (owner occupied): $578,800
Home Price/Income Ratio (2008): 11.91

San Francisco Median Income (2008): $71,957
San Francisco Home Median Price 2008 (owner occupied): $821,800
Home Price/Income Ratio (2008): 11.4

Oakland isn't going to be a "great" city until the disparity between the haves and have-nots in the city closes.

As you all know I'm not really a fan of Oakland, but an income ratio disparity of .5 points between the two cities isn't a lot. You starting to really blow smoke out your ass now.

I know it's not, but there are people here who claim S.F is 10x more unaffordable than Oakland. I think that theory has been soundly disproven.

if san francisco is a "great " city it would appear income disparity has little to do with becoming a "great" city.

Not to mention that it's an income to home ratio that doesn't take into consideration a whole slough of issues. Mr. Fantastic doesn't want to admit that a person making 100k per year - well off, but still middle class, can get far more bang for his buck in Oakland than he can San Francisco. Furthermore, because market rents are significantly cheaper in Oakland that the average student, grad student, young professional who doesn't yet own can save quite a bit of money over living in SF. Mr. Fantastic doesn't like to admit a lot of things. His life is about arguing and if he thinks he can find a way to disprove (as far as he sees it anyway) someone saying that housing in Oakland is cheaper than San Francisco, well by golly, he's going to try his darndest. =P

San Francisco is a great city simply because it's San Francisco.

Oakland isn't great because it's Oakland.

This statement as it stands is illogical. That would be like me saying Mr. Fantastic is pretentious simply because he is Mr. Fantastic.

But that's not illogical so it's a not a very good comparison

Guilty as charged! Though pretense, not without reason.
