Hello Bay area locals,

Thanks for reading this. Your insight and varying opinions help me a lot.

My company will announce the closing of our San Diego office tomorrow. Accordingly, we are going to be offered relocation to San Francisco where we are head quartered.

I've grown up and lived in So Cal my whole life and have been to San Francisco only once and that was ten years ago. I know nothing about San Francisco or the bay area.

I don't mind the cost of living or the cooler temps. What I want to know is about the people. What are the residents like? I'm an open minded, college educated, left leaning guy. I guess my only fear is experiencing some sort of "culture shock" that will have me hightailing back to SD. Thank!

AJ

I think the best way to determine whether or not you will have a culture shock is to check it out yourself before deciding to live here. It's impossible to tell how someone will feel about something as subjective as whether or not they will get along with people, especially given the extremely wide variation of people to be found in San Francisco. I'm afraid you'll just have to do the footwork.

I agree with imk to some degree especially regarding these two cities. Some like the differences and some don't.

If you are open-minded, educated and left-leaning you will not have any culture shock in San Francisco. In-fact you may feel more at home in the Bay Area than San Diego.

Thanks for the replies. We just now came out of our meeting and 110 people were pink slipped. Regardless of what happens in San Francisco, I feel very fortunate to have a job. I've talked to several people this weekend and I'm looking forward to my soon to be new "home town." Despite how much I love San Diego, it has always felt a little to "conservative" for me.

You should be fine. If you don't care for SF you can always live in the suburbs which can be cheaper and many have sunnier weather. There are 6 million people in the Bay Area so you'll find people of every stripe here.

What part of SD did you live in and are you looking for a similar type of environment? Some areas of the Bay Area are not that different than SD overall while others are fairly different. If you're worried about culture shock I'd probably avoid Berkeley unless you're a Ocean Beach type person. Might want to avoid SF but there are a good variety of neighborhoods there so you can probably find an area you're comfortable in. Suburbs would be your best option to find an area most similar to most of SD.

That's not true at all. I am a left leaning person and am not a fan of San Francisco at all.

The thing that turns me off is the weather, the pretentious attitudes and the close mindedness. At least in SD you have conservative and liberal people. SF is just like a hippy utopia and blah I just don't like it.

Best of luck to you.

He still might be in for a culture shock. I think "open-minded, educated and left-leaning" describes SD pretty well. But SF? The only one I can agree with is "educated." People are "open-minded" as long as you think like them () & SF isn't "left-leaning," it's allllllll the way on one side. (Berkeley even moreso, but...)
