Solvang is like a Dutch village plopped into the middle of the central coast. Really cute, and it's great if the Tour of California is in town.

You would probably want to do this, then go a few miles up the road to Buelton (much like Solvang), and visit Andersen's Pea Soup Restaurant. Just cuz you'll be wondering why there are billboards for hundreds of miles up and down the road for this place, and it's rather unique.

Further up the road, The Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo is a worthy stopover as well, given the funky homespun rooms, none of which is the like another.

OK, LOL now slow down. What is the Tour of California? Remember you are talking to an old Midwesterner and we don't know much about CA.

My hubby's sister and family is out there in LA and also his brother in Northern CA but I haven't been there but one time.

Confused -- are you saying Hwy 1 takes 9-10 hours if you really push it fast? A friend of ours did that last year but didn't get to see anything. I would think of a "banzai run" by freeway to be going up I-5 in the Central Valley, but that's only 375 miles or 6 hours. If it took someone up to 10 hours to go 375 miles, they'd be going 37 mph. If traffic's light, it only takes us 5.5 hours from Emeryville to LA going the fast route.

The Tour of California is the biggest American cycling race, they usually pop in to Solvang at some time during their race in May.

The road between Morro Bay and Carmel is full of switch backs and tight turns. 37 mph is probably even fast for the road. I would not do a two way on the road . I usually travel south when I do the trip, take the 101 on the north trip. Just between Morro and Carmel for me is a 7 hour trip when on the 101 is 2 hours.

Driving Highway 1 from LA to SF is a two day drive minimum if you are looking to enjoy the trip. (I did a three day from San Diego a few years back, spending the nights in Solvang (a Danish-themed town, by the way) and Cambria, near Hearst Castle. From LA in two days I'd find a place to stay somewhere between Cambria and Monterrey. Lots of excellent choices in there, from great camping to some of the most exclusive and luxurious lodging on earth.

Someone asked it it was better to drive north or south. I'd pick north so that I am not facing the sun the whole trip.

What is the speed limit along there? I heard it is slow. Also, if we want to see San Francisco wouldn't it be better to go up highway 1 so we won't be tired after we tour San Francisco? Come back on the faster highway to LA?
