I'm considering a gig down in Santa Clara, but the commute is giving me second thoughts. I'd be driving from Oakland to Santa Clara (580E to 880S) at normal 9-to-5 commuting hours.

Is the drive as bad as it used to be 5 years ago when I used to do it? About 1 hour each way? Is there a casual carpool now? Any info greatly appreciated.

It would suck and if it's a long term gig I'd move down there as soon as you can...I don't think there'd be casual carpool since that is mainly a way to reduce bridge tolls.

I know a guy who lived in Berkeley and commuted to Menlo Park I think and he said it sometimes took him up to 2 hours to get down there with traffic. He moved down there recently though.

Maybe look up vanpool where you have like 5 or 6 people who use a van and rotate driving I guess, a guy I know does that from Modesto to SF. I don't know what website does it, google "Bay Area vanpool" or something like that or look on 511.org.

Ha ha, well thanks for the honesty. Yeah, it would only be a 2 month contract, but still. Anyway thanks for the info!

If you can manage to leave earlier its not as bad. From Oakland you can expect at least an hour during normal commute times. If you can leave- say an hour or so earlier- the commute can be drastically shorter.

I did a couple evening test commutes from my workplace near 880/Montague. It took me an hour and a half to get to the Laurel district each time. 880 is godawful.

A good friend of mine does that but from Castro Valley, probably 20 minutes less, and leaves at home 6:30 to avoid the worst of it.

Why would you do 580 to 880 when 238/237 whichever one it is- is always backed up?

Where in Oakland are you coming from? Drive down to 880 and save yourself a headache.

I used to live in Santa Clara (in Rivermark) and would occasionally pick up my then-girlfriend (now wife) in downtown Oakland after she finished working. I completely agree with the others who said that the commute would suck.
